I am a Spanish resident who holds a Spanish driving license. I travel back to the UK regularly for family and work. I have a small apartment as my base. Car hire in the UK seems to have increased considerably particularly since it has become "somewhat" easier  to travel. With the number of times I go to the UK it is appearing more attractive to own a car in the UK instead of hiring. Has anybody in similar circumstances done this? I am particularly interested in how you have gone about insuring the vehicle. I have spoken to a couple of companies who will provide cover, are happy with my EU/Spanish license etc., but the premiums being quoted for a Toyota Aygo are circa. £500. Any advice would be most welcome.

We use Admiral.

They were OK with our Spanish licences (but they noted the licence changes on our policies).

Their costs seem fair.

I suggest you look for a insurance broker in the area of the UK you are located. They can search through a number of companies. If you have any no-claims discount in Spain the UK companies should make an allowance for that, though you would need to give them proof.

I usually use one of the comparison sites but I'm not sure how it would work with a Spanish licence. though you could still give it a try.  When the list of companies comes back you can ring the one you choose and talk through the details with them.

£500 seems high for a Aygo but the cost is very dependant upon location, your age, driving record, no-claims discount, etc.

Rgds,

Aitch.

Somewhere in my distant memory (ie: more than an hour ago!!) I seem to recall that if you are a Spanish resident with a Spanish driving licence, you can't legally own and drive a UK registered car in the UK.

Not sure if this is the case but I have provided a link to a similar question posted to the AA:

Cheers,

Bob

Thanks Bob. I have checked the situation out with the AA and it appears I can own a car registered to me but the key is I have to have a UK address. This I do as I own a small apartment which if necessary the relevant authorities can check if they want to. If I didn't have a UK address then then yes cannot do it. Suppose it a bit like UK residents who own a second home in Spain, they can own a Spanish registered car - mmm, think that's correct!!

Cheers

Many thanks. Talking to Admiral now. Appears they will no accept any no claims credit from Spain but we'll see what price they come up with.

Cheers

It would be interesting to know how your Admiral conversation works out.

In our case, we already had UK car insurance with Admiral, and we updated them to the effect that we had become Spanish Residents and been granted Spanish licenses. So our NCB was not impacted.

No luck with Admiral. They stated we had to be in the UK for six months or more for then to insure us. I think it is because we are new customers as opposed to your situation of being legacy customers. Interestingly Direct Line have provided a quote and even without any NCB it is the best to date. I have asked them to confirm they understand we are Spanish residents and the UK is a "second" home in which we will send less than six months a year in. Sometimes the call centres don't listen to what is being said to them!
