Hi again, just looked at tax allowances.Taking only my DWP into account both my wife a myself would receive an allowance of 5400 euros each as individuals and pay tax at 19% on the remainder is that correct.

However if we submit a joint return we would receive an extra 3400 euros on top off the allowances stated above

As I previously said our joint DWP pensions would total around £15000.

Kind regards

Paul

Isn't the benefit realisation for 1 person claiming the married allowance only real if the partner doesn't have much or any income?

If you both have income it seems better to each claim the 5500 personal allowance.

Jim has a guide for this and I believe there are additional allowance the older you get.

Sorry, but you're totally wrong. Read my guide that Lancelot posted the link to, plus my other tax guides.

Base rate of tax is 19.5%.

Gain €3400 allowance and lose €5550.

You're very unlikely to be liable for tax.

What didn't you like about my last reply to you?:

Joint tax returns or not

Hi, there was nothing wrong with your reply I was trying to clarify if the marriage allowance was additional to the basic allowance for both us. Thank- you for clarifying the matter . That said you're reply seems to indicate that our individual DWP incomes would not likely be taxed. How so when the allowance is 5700 euros.I would have thought we would pay some Tax. Surely we pay 19% of the diffence.

Thanks again

Paul

Paul, please read my guide to allowances - there's more than the personal allowance.
