We are now resident in Spain and receiving UK pensions. Now we have to apply for the EHIC cards issued in Spain, and return the ones we have to the UK. The online application is in Spanish language only. How and where can we apply in English please?

Have you read

http://www.tumbit.com/how-to-guides/articles/201-applying-for-an-ehic-card-as-a-spanish-resident.html

I'm not sure if it will give you enough information but I will also have to do this in a few weeks myself so thanks for reminding me.

Cheers Anne

Hi Anne,

Yes I had read this before and it confused me. I know the International Pension Centre in the UK said that we should apply for a Spanish card, but the article says that if you are receiving a pension from UK and not paying any social security in Spain, then you have to apply in writing to UK. I will have to ring them because it sounds like double Dutch to me! I'll let you know when I get the answer.

Thanks.

I have solved the query now. The article was correct saying that as UK pensioners who don't pay into the social security system in Spain, our new EHIC cards have to come from the UK. The number to ring is 0044 191 218 1999, option 1. They checked that the authorities in Spain had informed them via the S1 forms, and will now send an application form. When visiting the UK you just need to prove you are receiving their state pension. Our residency was granted late December. How long it took for Spain to contact the UK, I don't know, but once this has been done it is a simple process.

Hope this helps others who are not sure what to do.

Thank you letting me know the correct thing to do. Anne
