My Spanish doctor assigned to me at the health centre spoke to me in English reviewed my medication and changed one of my tablets however this made me ill so went back to the same doctor who now tells me she can’t speak English and gave me a form to change doctor, I went to the reception told them I needed an English speaking doctor they said the doctor you have just seen speaks English? What should I do should I complain or has anyone else had this problem.

You have the right to change doctors if you have a reason. The fact the doctor can't speak English is not a valid reason as you are supposed to turn up with a translator if you can't speak Spanish. The fact the doctor now says he can't speak English could be that he is wary of misinterpretation which many doctors do.

If you'd ask to change doctors as you either no longer trusted or you had a breakdown in confidence you would have been OK. To ask to change to a doctor who speaks English would not be acceptable.

It’s the doctor who is telling me to change doctors because in the space of ten days she can no longer speak English she has already given me a full diabetic exam and changed my medication while speaking to me in English seems highly unprofessional to me

In the Spanish health system you cannot expect the professionals to speak any other language than Spanish.

Go back to the reception and ask for a change of doctor. You don't even need to give a reason.

Next time you visit a doctor take a translator with you.

Cheers, J

I think you’re missing the point she is the English speaking doctor that we asked for originally and she spoke to me in English but now she won’t is she being awkward or doesn’t like English people who have only been in Spain 6 months and hasn’t learned the language yet can’t understand what’s going on every other Spanish person we have dealt with so far have been fantastic lovely p

Nobody has missed the point! For whatever reason she feels uncomfortable speaking, diagnosing or prescribing with you, in English. So a Medical interpreter is essential.  Changing doctors is not always easy, as in a small practice, the other doctor(s) may have a waiting list. The onus here is on you.

She has already diagnosed me twice in the last 4 weeks surely a professional would have wanted to follow up on the medication she had given me

It is possible that she no longer feels confident trying to discuss medication in detail in a language which is not her own, as many nuances may be missed. The onus is really on you to take a translator, but whilst one may sympathise with your perceived predicament, complaining about her won’t achieve anything.
