Hi All,

I had the following message from Hidriqua to a water leakage at the meters which I thought we could not touch and that it was water companys responsibility.  Could some throw some light on it.

Dear customer,

According with the water service incidence you has informed us about, please be informed that the water leak you are referring to is located precisely on the meter valve, you will need to contact either your insurance company or a local plumber in order to proceed with the repairs, since the company will only take responsibility of any technical problem or breakdown linked to the main water supply located outside and the meter itself. The interior installation and the meter valves (at either side of the meter) are the contract holder’s or property owner’s responsibility.

However, if you wish for us to turn the main supply off in order to proceed with said repair, you can reach back to us through this “Contact” option, providing a Spanish phone number for our workmen to call you if necessary.

I'm a bit surprised that they say the valve on the incoming supply before the meter is your responsibility however ultimately if a leak is before the meter - and therefore not costing you money, and not causing you any actual problems or inconvenience, then I can't see how you're under any obligation to do anything about it.

If Hidraqua are happy to let their water leak and go to waste I'd say that was their lookout!

Just be very cautious before doing anything. 5 years ago I had a 1,400 euro bill from hydro aqua and they said I had a water leak and had actually used that amount of water over a thousand euros worth. I had a plumber come and check everything including the garden as ws have a pool. There was no water leak. As I refused to pay it they cut my water off and refused to put it back on unless I paid it. I took a photo of water meter and eventually paid the bill very reluctantly.  My water was turned back on, nothing was fixed and my Bill's returned to normal. It was a complete scam... my bill totalled more the the 17 villas in total on my urbanisation.  They had me hook line and sinker.... heard lots of similar tales too.

Thanks for your message. I was equally surprised with their response and one would have thought that we are responsible once the water leaves the meter that we would be responsible.

Thanks for your response. Is there not an independent ombudsmen where you could take your complain. Thankfully I recently had an issue with EON in UK and took them to the independent utility ombudsmen and won my issue. I believe there must be a similar authority in Spain otherwise these monopolies will take us for a ride.

This post that was quoted has been deleted.

Thanks for your response.

The response was in English as posted here. I had gone to my online account and asked them what was happening to the leakage and if they had rectified it as I am still in UK.

Hi.

Do you have two meters........one outside and another somewhere within your property or boundary?

The main pipe feeding the meter in my eyes is always the responsibility of the water authority. If its the outgoing pipe from the meter to inside your house then thats usually the responsibility of the account holder.

Have you tried turning off the mains water tap in the house.....then gone outside to see if the meter is drawing water. If it is then the leak is on the pipe going from the meter to the house.

Sorry if I'm stating the obvious.

Thanks for your response. Turned off the stopcocks inside the house. The meter is static but the leak is from the pipe entering the meter and therefore thought not my responsibility as this should be the water company's responsibility. But the respponse from Hidriqua states I am responsible.

Sorry I understand what you are saying but just can't get why that is! So if the leak is in the street you have to dig it up to repair?

Like someone else said on the thread if the leak is on their side and doesn't effect your usage then leave it.

I don't get why you have got a bill so high if its not on your property and is on the incoming supply to the meter. That leak could be anywhere and at any other property. If you have neighbours why don't you speak to them as something is just not adding up here.

Bizarre!
