The new ETIAS visa which is coming into effect in 2024. How will it affect us UK passport holders with Spanish residency.

Do we need to apply for the visa ?

1. It's not a visa. It is for those people from countries who travel to Spain visa free.

2. Those resident in Spain will not require to complete the ETIAS.

EES is due in at the same time and that means photos but more importantly dabs for all travellers, the latter will no doubt give pause to some and for the dumb or incautious likely result in a fair few hitherto unsolved crimes being solved.Gotta' keep the crim's and other undesirables out!

A national of the United Kingdom who is a beneficiary of the Withdrawal Agreement

UK nationals and their family members who are beneficiaries of the Withdrawal Agreement are exempt from ETIAS: they may reside on the territory of their EU host country and travel to other European countries requiring ETIAS as long as they hold documents proving their status.

The EU updated that and no longer mentions "a beneficiary of the Withdrawal Agreement" and now says:

" ETIAS is a travel authorisation that covers nationals of visa-exempt countries coming to the EU for short-term stays. If you have a residence permit, residence card, or a document issued by any of the European countries requiring ETIAS which authorises your stay, you do not need an ETIAS travel authorisation."

So any UK citizen who is a resident in any EU country will not need an ETIAS.

I also note the links do not mention the same requirement (ETA - Electronic Travel Authorisation) that all non Brits travelling to UK visa free will have to apply for at £7 and lasting 2 years. All to be introduced about the same time next year with the EU Entry/Exit System (EES) for the EU about 6 months later and probably immediately after the Paris Olympics ending in August 2024.
