Hi  Have been able at long last to get an appointment in Cartagena, will have a wee day out lol  just need to get all documents together now!!! Thanks again Marcliff for all your help and information and patience

Congratulations lol.

I did mine at Cartagena a few weeks ago and the staff were great. A little tip - dont arrive more than 10 mins early as the ticket machine wont produce your ticket until close to your appt time- go to machine when you enter office on 1st floor, enter you NIE numerals and machine produces a ticket e.g C1234 , than take a seat until the screen shows your number telling you which of the 8 tables to go to. Have fun !!

Cartagena seems to be the only one with appointments. Alicante, Elche and Murcia all coming up with all appointments taken for the next few days, please try later. Any DGT office that does it will do.

Just a query, anyone over 65 just turned up without an appointment like it says you can do? Be interested to know if that is working.

The appointment in advance at the Directorate General of Traffic (DGT) can be requested by telephone by calling 060 or through the Internet from the official website of the organization. However, those citizens who are 65 years of age or older, may go to the Headquarters without having to request it.

Yes really easy to find. I went by train from Balsicas (Traffico is about 10 min walk from Cartagena station) - leave station and continue straight along Avenida de America -straight across roundabout to Calle San Diego - continue straight along to Calle Duque - turn left after about 100 yards into Calle Gisbert ( Mr Kebab is on the corner) the Traffico is about halfway along on the LHS - just opposite the big viewing lift for the Roman site. Go up the stairs to first floor ,through doors and you will see the ticket machine facing you.

No, it's not complicated. They just put the classifications required on the form.

Now that the Ministry of the Interior in Spain has announced the bilateral agreement between Spain and the UK to enable those taking out residency in Spain from UK to exchange their driving licence, there are a few procedures to go through.

Those now coming to Spain and those already here will have a period of 6 months in which to exchange their licence as from March 16th 2023. You can do this even if you licence has expired since you have been here but not if it expired before taking out residency. Those coming to Spain after that ...

...date will have a period of 6 months in which to exchange their licence from the date they take out residency. Failure to do so will mean you will not be able to drive in Spain and we don't want to have to go through the taking of driving tests again.

Firstly, you need an appointment with trafico. This can be done with the DGT at Alicante or Elche. You will need to make a cita previa (prior appointment) before attending. You can do this by calling 060 or completing a request online.

The updated page to obtain the appointment is now Cita Previa DGT

You will need to complete the application form which is here Exchanging Foreign Driving Licence

Once you have the appointment, you need to take the completed application form.
You need your passport and a copy.
Your NIE certificate and copy
Your residence card and copy. If you have a TIE this may obviate the need for your passport and NIE certificate but take them to be safe.

The medical and psychological test certificate. There are loads of posts on here where to get them done but this map shows you the recognised centres. Just enter your province (Alicante) and town. This will cost approximately 40 euro. Note it is only valid for a certain time so don't get it until your appointment is confirmed.
Your current UK licence and a copy.#
Two photographs 32x25mm.
The fee of €24.78. This can be paid at a bank or at the actual appointment.
If you are over 70 the fee is not applicable.

The British Embassy is advising that you do this straight away and do not wait until the 6 months approaches as you will not be able to change your licence nor drive in Spain once that 6 months is up.

Would just like to say a big THANK YOU to everyone who made the effort to help make the process of getting your driving licence exchanged for a Spanish one straightforward .  The advice, patience and time taken by all was fantastic and easy to follow.  Needless to say I went through the process at Cartagena today, with all my documents as advised above, it was all easy and painless and staff couldnt have been any more helpful and pleasant so heres to happy and safe driving from now on!!! (get provisional paper copy next week and full licence in approx 3 months) which can either be posted or picked up at the DGT Office were you applied for the licence)   THANK YOU!!!!   Gillian  PS  If I can give any advice on my experience to anyone please dont hesitate to ask  Gillian
