Well done, it is such a shame that you had to put yourself through the stress
Hi Eileen,
Thankyou,
Yes it has been stressful and maybe a deal buster for would be older nlv'ers.
I really hope you get your wish and that this Draconian law is changed pronto.
I'm just so glad it's over.
Good luck with your venture

Thanks Denise,
Ive just spoken with my insurers and they are not going to increase my insurance, so that was a welcome, common sense answer.
I'm just thinking about contacting the embassy in Alicante, not sure if they are they right people to ask this question.
" Do I have to show the green L plate as a driver of 50years without accident. Am I going to be penalised as a Spanish new driver, by the following penalties. A new driver in Spain is only awarded 8 points on their licence instead of 12. Another is , if I am breathalised, I am only allowed half the amount of alcohol in my blood that of a longer term driver."
Hope your daughter is enjoying her driving freedom.
ps I rang the consulate and they recommended I contact trafico to ask for an exemption. So, I asked my driving school who are doing the admin of getting my new Spanish licence, I've asked them to ask for an exemption on my behalf.
fingers crossed

Hi Steve,
I'm afraid your lawyer is wrong - you may wish to send her the extract from the Spanish Consulates in the UK, which Chrisnpaul has helpfully posted above.

Hi Steve,
That's disappointing to hear. The problem with a lot of Spanish law is that it isn't well written, so it's interpretation can vary from one lawyer to the next. What amazes me about the advice you're receiving is that this isn't new, these rules have been applied to other Third Country Nationals for years, so I find it hard to believe that they haven't dealt with similar circumstances previously.
Of course, the interpretation of the law can also vary from one Consulate to the next, hence the "discretion" I mentioned in an earlier post. For example, we know from the feedback of other forum members that the Spanish Consulate in Manchester is easier to deal with than London's, which leads me to wonder whether the lawyers are advising based on what they believe will be the quickest and easiest route to success - although, in both your examples, it appears the lawyers haven't read their own Consulates' advice! The good news is that, in all other aspects of the financial requirements, you and Jan appear to be very well placed.
We're now in 'silly season' and if the August go-slow in Spain applies to their overseas Embassies, Ines may be back from holiday before the Consulate has replied to his query! When he does get back to you, it would be very helpful if you wouldn't mind updating this thread with their response.
Kind regards,
Kim

Hi, Innes is also our lawyer and SHE is dealing with our renewal which has been a little stressful as we have had to supply a marriage licence issued in the last 6 months and apostled which is then sent to the translation services. We used a company in Glasgow who were very efficient and Innes received it in 2 weeks. Alicante then came back and requested bank statements within a month of applying so we had to contact the bank to send them as we normally get quarterly statements. Innes gave us the two options of filing as individuals or as a married couple as we have separate and joint bank accounts and settled to send as a married couple. We will continue to jump through whatever hoops Alicante want as the option of no renewal and then going to 90 days is not what we want . I will keep the forum updated on how our 2 year renewal progresses .
