Firstly Wise, based in the UK is not a bank. This means that you miss out on compensation should they go bust. However many people use them because they can issue you with  accounts with various IBANS. For people in Spain that means using a Belgium IBAN which meets most requirements except Agencia Tributaria.

If you are a permanent resident in Spain then the banks are very good and most give free banking with some terms and conditions although not very onerous. Especially to the retired on pensions.

If you are a temporary resident then a Wise (or one of the many popping up) would be better, They are not Spanish banks but do give an EU IBAN, some Italian, some Belgian etc. Just remember they are not governed by banking guarantees like proper banks so don't keep a lot in them, just enough to pay your bills and use some for visits.

Spain banking charges are very harsh for non residents unless you have things like all your insurances with them, shares in the bank or other things. 

We are permanent resident pensioners and pay no banking charges at all with a Spanish bank provided we have a regular (more than 300 euro) monthly pension, use the credit cards 3 times in a quarter and have at least 3 direct debits. 

We are resident and use La Caixa. No problems, very efficient and it seems the only charge is for the annual credit card fee.

We don't get charged a credit card fee at all. We used to pay for a second debit card but haven't been charged since we had the credit cards.

You are lucky! To be fair, I used the term credit card somewhat generically from habit, actually we only have debit cards here, but yes, we are charged an annual fee for the privilege, but I don’t think it’s huge if I remember correctly.

Revolut is a FULLY EU insured bank, with insurance of Euro100,000 per customer, with a Lithuanian or Irish IBAN.
