Hi Audrey,

Sabadell has changed its rules (again).  As a Spanish resident, I now pay €20 per quarter, increased from €15.  Like several other members on here, my branch told me that I should have received a letter from them in April this year, giving advance warning of the change - and like several other members on here, I didn't!  I challenged this at my branch, but it was explained to me that now you have to pay a direct pension payment of minimum €700 per month into your Sabadell account, plus buy 2 other insurance or investment products, to qualify for free banking.

Kind regards,

Kim

Hi,

We have both been full residents for 8 years.

Both my wife and i have our UK government pension paid directly into Sabadell,  she has some disability payments paid directly into Sabadell and I have two private pensions paid directly into Sabadell.

I don't have any other Sabadell products whatsoever (insurance etc).

I haven't paid any banking fees for around 2 years after they wrote to me and said that because I have reached the income levels paid directly into Sabadell I would no longer be required to pay bank maintenance fees.

Hi,

A lot of forum members have closed their Sabadell accounts and opened a free account with "Wise" online banking. You can pay all your direct debits from their accounts.

Hi Steve,

I transfer around €2,000 per month into Sabadell, but was told by our branch that because the money isn't paid direct by my husband's pension provider, we don't qualify for free banking.  The only way around it is to have ALL his pension paid direct, but I don't want the surplus accumulating in Sabadell, earning diddly-squat.

If Audrey is non-resident, I too would highly recommend she switches to Wise.

Kind regards,

Kim

Hi Audrey,

Sounds like you're in the same position as us.  We also have all our direct debits going through Sabadell, but my branch told me that we need to buy two other products from them, e.g. insurances or investments.  However, the money I save from buying our insurances elsewhere more than covers Sabadell's €80 annual management fee, plus they have a very good online presence and mobile app, and a very extensive ATM network.

What irritates me most is the underhand way they make these increases, claiming they've sent letters that they haven't - I told the personal banker at my branch that I'm on a forum of more than 52,000 foreigners and many other Sabadell customers had reported that they hadn't received a letter either - but, as usual, it was met with the Spanish equivalent of the Gallic shrug!

I don't know whether it's still available, but Cajamar offer an account called "Wefferent", which was free of charges.  If you want to change banks, it may be worth looking at that one.

Kind regards,

Kim

Hi Kim

I don't know if Cajamar,s weferrent account is still free but as you know I highly recommend it and 3 and half years since opening ours we still haven't paid a cent in fees. I should imagine as a resident it would be easier to open an account online although for us as non residents it was a little more difficult in branch and with our limited Spanish too. However thank God for Google translate we got there. So much better than Sabadell.

Regards

Pauline
