In all honesty, we found Santa Pola disappointing. Commercial, charmless, grimy. There may be attractive areas, but the central part is very much a working area. Nothing wrong with that, far from it, but not a tourist destination. I recommend nearby Gran Alacant any day of the week.

Which is why we like it.:)

We don’t want bucket n spade n kiss me quick hats all along the front. We don’t want ads for fish n chips on every corner. We want to feel like we live in Spain.   No, it’s not the prettiest or best kept of towns but the folk here are quite welcoming. It’s just the right amount of relaxed living whilst having a bit of life to it, for us anyway.

But , it would be a boring world if we all liked the same things ! ;)

Exactly! If you want full English,  sky sports, roast dinner and everything british, then gran alacant will be perfect and deffinately not santa pola!! We popped to a bar in gran alacant few weeks ago and the english lady said she wanted to move to santa pola but her teenage son doesn't like spanish food, so moved to gran alacant instead 🤦

Actually, I agree with you. I would happily live in Santa Pola precisely because it is authentic.

We spent 3 months in Santa Pola Feb-April and loved the place. We loved the walks along the front and the multitude of tapas bars and restaurants. We liked the fact it is a working town with a lovely harbour and nice little back street bars. We would think it’s a great place to live

I live in Santa Pola, a block away from the beach at Playa Levante.  I gave up my car, and driving, a year and a half ago as there is no need since I can walk everywhere in SP, and get everything I need.  On the rare occasions I have to go out of town, I either take a taxi or walk to the bus station.  SP is an idyllic, small beach town/fishing port that oozes character and personality.  The people are very friendly, but, obviously there are many more Spanish than English people.  Still quite a number of expats, who seem to go to Los Montaditos (on the front opposite Burger King) in the afternoon and evenings. There is a great chess club Mondays, Wednesdays & Fridays in La Senia, opposite Mercadona on the Elche road out of town.  The bus service is excellent.

In my opinion, you want to live close to the port or beach, and no further out than a restaurant/bar called Good Mood.  Santa Pola del Este is a slog, and without a car, you'd feel isolated.

I've lived here for 18 months, and I absolutely love it.  Spain is the 7th country I've lived in, and of all the places I've lived in, SP is my favourite by far, and I never intend to leave it.  If you send me a private message, I'll be happy to walk around with you one day.  I also have a very good realtor, Vanessa, who speaks good English, and who found me this place.  You couldn't pay me to live in Gran Alicante or the La Marina urb.

You are right. This is exactly how I see it.

First of all, it's not meant to be a tourist destination, other than for those with 2nd homes who come down from Madrid during the summer months.  But as a delightful place to live year round with nice people, a port/marina with bags of character, and lots of good restaurants,  I don't think it can be beat.  And as for the description chamless, I could not disagree more.  Charmless does however describe Gran Alacant, plus you have to have a car there, as do you in La Marina.

I apologize for using word 'charmless',  I agree that SP is full of charm and character.
