We are relocating permanently to Spain early next year and my 79 year old mother is coming with us .She's active and in good health .She has a colostomy and is worried about getting her supply of bags etc... She will qualify for an S1 .Can anyone in a similar situation  advise me please please?

Many thanks

Hi,

Anyone who applies for residency after the end of this year will not benefit from free healthcare. At the end of this year EHIC and S1 applications will end when the UK transition period ends and will no longer be part of the EU.

Applications being made prior to the end of the year will as far as we currently know retain these benefits.

Regards

Vivienne

Hi

Thank you for taking the time to reply .My mother is an  Irish / EU citizen  and pensioner so does she have to pay for private health care ? I thought she would be able to benefit from the Spanish state healthcare ?

Irish citizenship/Irish passport is not the blanket 'get out of Brexit free' card many believe it to be.

The critical factor is who pays her pension because it's there where her S1 will come from.

If the 'and pensioner' part of "Irish / EU citizen and pensioner" means that she gets her pension from Ireland then all should be good.

If it's UK and DWP however then what the previous poster says is correct and those arriving after Dec 31st. will be stripped of any entitlement to an S1 both then and in the future if they are not yet of pensionable age.

There is a chance that might change as part of a Brexit deal but I wouldn't hold your breath for it.

Other than knowing that they are of course used in Spain I know nothing more of colostomy bags so cannot comment on that part of your question.

Thank you for taking the time to reply - I appreciate the information - just to clarify - so anyone of any age moving to Spain permanently after 31/12/20  will have to pay for private health insurance wether EU or non EU citizen - is that correct ? Can they opt in to the state system after a year ?

The supply of colostomy bags should not be a problem, I am acquainted with someone who uses them. However, she does have private insurance, which usually excludes cover for drugs or supplies, so am assuming she pays privately for them; she is not of pensionable age.

Currently after a year it is possible to pay into the state health system, in the region of 65 Eu per person per month.

But the truth is that no one really knows exactly what the situation will be.

Changes from Dec 31st. will only apply to British citizens as a direct result of Brexit so yes, after that date British citizens aspiring to residency will need full PHI fot the first year and then should be able to switch to Convenio Especial which for an under 65 year old will cost €60/mth rising to €157/mth thereafter, medicine costs not included.
