Elsewhere, Ireland for example, standing charges for the 900,000 smart meters already installed, are about 50-80% more expensive than the old meters AND the per unit price is MORE expensive except for 2 hours between 2am and 4am, with unit price between 5pm and 7pm being even more expensive again on top of that.
The splurge about being able to see when you use the most electricity, and giving you the chance to reduce it, is TOTALLY NEGATED by these increased charges AND if you do reduce your usage they then charge you a LOW USAGE CHARGE
What you say about the smart meter charges in Ireland (I am presuming NI) could explain what Grannyrose said about increased charges, I believe she lives in NI. In England the cost of the smart meter rollout is recovered from all consumers, hence no difference in tariffs for either type of meter.
I don't believe the majority of people use the smart meters to save energy, after the first couple weeks of looking the novelty wore off for me. It might be different now usage costs more. Going to a smart meter for me cost nothing to install and there are no difference in tariffs.
I've never heard of a low useage tariff, which energy suppliers applies them?
