Latest figures : Spain 14000 infected / 600 deaths  ,   UK  2000 / 70

Spain : streets almost deserted  ,  UK : streets busy (London Underground jam-packed)

Something not right about these figures. Am I the only one thinking Spain figures more honest than UK's ?

Hi am not a mathematician, but the percentages to seem to me Spanish deaths = 4.5% of total and British deaths = 3.5% of total, please correct me if I am wrong

I think you completely missed the point. Why is the number of infected & deaths in UK only a small fraction of Spain's despite UK's population density being three times Spain's ?

Boca J & Peter (very interesting) My only input on (day5) is:

The number infected, only are reported of those tested. For eg: I´ve not been to a doctor for 40 yrs. I, & others (as others have posted) may have "had" it, & survived it. (just a thought?)

Keep safe.

Well I think we will have ponder on that one, as I think the uk are more concerned about toilet paper and panic buying at the moment.

Because the two countries are at a different point in the life of the virus/infection spread. The UK will soon catch Spain up, as will most countries.

This, of course, assumes countries are actually testing. As per last week, the USA was testing on average of 26 people per 1m population. S. Korea, by contrast, was testing 5,000 people per million population. Some difference!

When you dig down into the stats, it's obvious many countries are massively manipulating the top line figures. Most likely so their leaders can pretend they are better than everyone else and have it under control, a la the great orange oaf!

I suspect in a month, once this thing is everywhere, and countries are forced to A. Do proper testing, and B. Make the results public, we'll see a much flatter playing field.

Could it be that UK government's economic consideration outweighs any health issues, otherwise why schools & businesses are still open ? There is no lock-down as in Spain.

And what is the connection between this virus and panic buying of toilet papers ? Do they think the more toilet papers they have the less chance of getting this virus ?

I think that's unfair. I'm not a fan of the Tories, in fact, the opposite, I'm long time member of the labour party, but I think it's unfair some of the criticism the government have been getting. Are they putting economic considerations above health? I don't see how anyone can say that. If (big IF) what they have announced is taken at face value, they are doing a lot to support businesses of all sizes. More is needed, but they've said this is just the start.

why schools & businesses are still open?

Many businesses are not. Many businesses that can continue, or indeed need to continue, are remaining in operation. What should they do? Should ALL business just stop? Can you even begin to imagine the catastrophic repercussions of that?

Why are schools open? Why close them? But, suspect that is being announced anyway later today. Regardless, there seem to be good medical and social reasons to keep them open and not that much pointing to closing them, other than to appease the herd.

As I say, as a Labour member it's not in my nature to support a Tory government, but given the circumstances, and the fact that this is uncharted waters, and the fact that they appear to be doing what few governments around the world are doing: Following proper scientific and medical advice, I think everyone needs to get on the same page.
