Many thanks for that ,I'm trying to open with Cajamar which was another members suggestion ,am having problems with form online as does not accept British mobile no ,dont have Spanish and also for some reason wont accept  NIE no ,if cant proceed will try your suggestions

Oh John, are you trying to open online with Cajamar instead of going into branch?. I did previously state their online application for account doesn't recognise white NIE, s which is why you need to go into branch to set up. All described in earlier reply. You need to "join" their bank with an ID they give you which then enables opening of account online. Don't give up just visit branch.

Only if you are resident in Spain with Spanish address can you register with N26 to get a Spanish IBAN. UK residents no longer accepted

Hi folks been with banco santander here for a while and the liquidation del contrato was €10 a month

now they’ve hiked it up to €16 a month

thoughts please ?

We are non-residents. We moved from Sabadell to BBVA and bought 1,000 BBVA shares at 4 euros each so that we don't have bank charges. We only bought our shares in November and already they are worth over 5,000 euros. We are well impressed. We use Wise to transfer sterling to euros into our BBVA account since 1st January 2021, so now no charges for these deposits. We are happy with our current set up

Some good advice on here, thanks for that. I use Bankia and have done for years now, they have slowly been putting their charges up year after year, and i am up-to 16 euro's a month now.

Well Sue ,it looks like you did yourself a nice bit of business  ,am pleased for you but not to say if I bought at 5 euros they may not go other way and I could lose more than what Sabadell charge  ,I've never been a fan of stocks and shares ,I can pick enough losers on horses and football  without adding stocks and shares to my portfolio ,I think il stick to a safer method ,but thanks for sharing

Our fees as non.residents used to be 35 euros per quarter ,now up to 40 euros per quarter ,another thing to make you aware is charges for withdrawals  ,we arrived back in Spain 24 May  ,I went to Sabadell in La Marina withdrew 70 euros and went back 45mins later and withdrew another 70 ...

...,when I viewed my account over the next couple of days twice charged 1,75 euros for withdrawals  ,i wont get stung again il go back to withdrawing from Santander as we have done in the past

We are with CaixaBank and there is no charge for withdrawal whilst using there machines also withdraw any amount of cash from an English card upto €500 and it is only a €2 fee.

Hi John, when we opened in 2019, there were no conditions at all, didn't have to make a deposit but as we,d just closed Sabadell we had a big deposit to put in anyway. Their agent also opened the account completely for us( daunting as our Spanish is limited and no one spoke English in our branch)...

... but we are inland, very Spanish. We used Google translate and we managed. Now having read other posts more recently it seems you now commit to being a customer of the bank and given an ID to enable you to open the account online. Their online application does not recognise white Nie,s only resident numbers. They also ask for a deposit but don't think its much, but this stays your money not theirs. It may sound a bit daunting but the end result is so worthwhile. We, ve already saved hundreds. This bank is more like a credit union bank, started originally in rural areas for poor farmers, but you wouldn't think it as its just like any other bank commercially. We took all our direct debit references to set new d/ds up, but as we had closed Sabadell that day, I actually emailed or phoned all companies with new details to ensure they would be paid with no missed payments. As you are on the coast I feel sure you will have an English speaker. They do charge a small fee(was 5€.now 7€ if you go into the branch to make a transaction but we have never needed to do that. There's no fee for bank cards either or non resident certificate, but you must stress you are non resident on opening and another tip, on opening the basic account doesn't give you "extra services" like being able to transfer money to other accounts and entities and to mobiles, but we just went in and the agent added that for us. The bank cards took 2wks to collect so keep some money back if you are closing old bank account first. I have written many replies on this subject as I, m so pleased with them, I hope this helps you to do it. You won't regret it all the other banks are constantly adding restrictions and charges but Cajamar have not had 1cent since opening.

Ps. If I, ve been helpful please tap helpful tab.

Regards

Pauline

This is an update to previous info on opening a Cajamar account as told me by another forum member. To open now you need to pay 60€ to become a member of the cooperative (I assume this is still your money in the account not a fee) and they are asking for an initial deposit of 1037€ which is definitely your money in the account. This may have been in place when we opened but not mentioned as we initially opened with over 2000€ from our old Sabadell account. This may or may not be a difficulty for some but at the end of the day you will have a bank account with a cooperative bank ( I did say they told us they were a "peoples" bank not a bank always looking to extort with fees so I likened it earlier to a credit union). I congratulate anyone who perseveres with this unusual opening procedure, you won't regret it, especially during this climate as institutions will be looking to increase as many charges s possible to cover the covid damage to them. I feel sorry for anyone who can't or doesnt follow through as we couldn't be happier with their service especially when I read the huge amount of complaints of fees and conditions.

Pauline
