Hi Steve

I noted your 'safer than Nottingham' comment, I too am from Nottm haha

Elinspain

Elinspain.....yes, born and bred in Stapleford. Nottm is a beautiful city by day but unfortunately  not a place to be at night.

Think the tourist areas or urbanisation that have many holiday homes seem to be the targets. Don’t hear much about burglaries in our area of guardamar except the urbanisations that come under the guardamar banner  but sure someone wil correct me if I am wrong

Torrevieja is a very large town/ city.  Like any large town , there are good areas and some not so good. The wonderful thing about Torrevieja is that it’s a working town on the coast. Always people about and restaurants and shops open. Don’t be confused when you see the names of the newer expat areas such as Villamartin, La Zenia, Cabo Roig, all lovely but not in Torrevieja. The traffic going or coming on the N332 is ghastly most of the time but there are. Male vets, restaurants, shops etc.,that you don’t need to go near Torrevieja.

La Mata is an old Spanish village on the other side of Torre, on the airport side.  Beautiful coastal resort and has a wonderful bus service running every 20 mins into town. Boardwalk for all our daily exercise, snakes along the sand dunes with restaurants and coffee shops/ bars all along the way.  I have NEVER, EVER felt frightened walking anywhere in this area, day or night. You have a choice of cheap and cheerful dining or highend fine fare which is where you will find the wealthy Spanish eating during the siesta hours and Sundays.

Just thinking about it makes me remember how much I love being there.  Probably not for a long time this year but we will return whenever permitted.

Good luck and I hope you find the perfect holiday home.

When I read the local British press the impression I get is that overall crime figures are higher on the South of the Costa Blanca than the North, but I don't know if that's true and I have no statistics to back it up whatsoever. And if correct I don't know why that would be, perhaps a greater density of seasonal and weekend tourists?

A Spanish drugs baron was recently arrested in Altea but hardly a threat to you or me!

Certainly in Denia, Javea, Moraira, Altea I have never felt unsafe at any time of day or night. But then I know how to minimise my risk late at night.

3 years ago some Gitanos occupied an unfinished building in our village and the police sent them on their way the next day, with the building being properly bricked up 24 hours after that (which it should have been in the first place)

My local village, population 2000, has a police office beside the town hall, open from 8.00am-midnight, not likely in the UK. Unless you know different!

As unemployment and poverty soars due to the pandemic it's certain that petty crime will increase, but I suspect crime against the person is low throughout the coast. I can't help feeling secluded "Campo" properties are most at risk from burglary, think carefully about security before buying one.

Doing a bit of research,Torrevieja had the highest crime rate, but that was as far back as 2004,and if you read the 2020 comments, the rates are considerably lower?

Would be worried for our safety if we still lived in Manchester, but feel perfectly safe here.

It's a common fallacy that crops up now and then that these gassings take place to rob people whilst they are in their beds....

I've never actually read or heard anything about anyone getting robbed in this way.

I looked up the crime rates recently for the Costa Blanca and Torrevieja and Benidorm were the top two. Here in Benidorm the crimes that add up are mainly theft from tourist areas including pickpockets and handbag/phone theft. Prostitution and the "Pea men" are very much a problem too.

More problems are starting to rise with squatters entering vacant property and holiday homes. Its extremely difficult to evict squatters who have families and this is putting some buyers off. That problem would be worth looking into further.....

Steve

This did happen years ago and affected several people including one of the guys in the Torrevieja forum who had lived here for years.

I can't remember whether it was an anaesthetic type of gas or something else but it went in for quite a while. Would have been about 2001/2.

I know of one household that experienced the gas/robbery.

It was around 15 years ago, but it did happen. It was not in Torrevieja.

I know the the victims personally.

Their car was stolen as well.

Just replied to this - it was happening around 2001/2 when I first bought.
