Oh course it’s daunting for you but we are here to help you!

Please keep a home in the U.K. in an area that you like. Spain in the summer is EXTREMELY HOT and unless you plan to sit by the sea all day long, you will have to stay indoors with the air on on. Not great. You could buy a smaller place on the coast or near loved ones and return home and enjoy a ...

...lovely British summer /autumn and then return fir winter sunshine. If you choose to become a resident, you will have to pay for private health care until you reach retirement age. Tax allowance is poor compared with U.K. so financially you will have less income. I believe you pay for prescriptions but not too bad.

Should you decide to keep your British status and free health care, that will be fine BUT if you do not become a resident, you can only stay for 90 days returning home for another 90 days and then permitted another 90 days back in Spain. This may alter so keep an eye on the forum for information.

If you can cope with this, then fine and if not then apply for residency. However, if you happen to have been born anywhere in Ireland or a parent or Grandparent, you can apply for an Irish passport and have no worries about the 90 day rule as Ireland is in the EU.

You have plenty to think about now. Please keep in touch and let us know what you plan to do. Cheers

Thanks very much again.

Actually the hot weather does not nother me so much, i lived in Florida five years where the temperstures were on average 80°c plus, Christmas days were spent on the balcony in a 70°c climate, i loved the heat, which is the only reason i was thinking of leaving the UK, today it's 2°c and i see Torreviaja is 11°c, doesn't leave much for thought!

I'll keep in touch...

Thanks.

It may be 11°, but the wind is whistling from the northwest and we’re wrapped up in winter clothes today with the heating on full blast!

Torrevieja is a lovely place, we moved down from France three years ago. We no longer have, or need, a car.  We are renting just south of the main town, beyond the Náufragos beach. Everything we need is in walkable distance, beaches, bars, restaurants, supermarkets, town centre, health centre, hospital etc.  We chose to face northeast, catching the morning sun and not needing to keep awnings down all day to keep the sun off.  It gets very hot in July and August, but as we are shaded we rarely use the air con, although from mid December onwards we use the heating a LOT.  You will find it’s a matter of personal preference.

I can’t stress enough that you need to make several visits at different times to see how you like the feel of the place before making any decision as to where to make your permanent home.  Many areas will be secondary homes and thus empty much of the year, they can become very noisy during the holiday season.

One thing I can say is that if you do your research beforehand and then move here, you’re highly unlikely to regret it

I wish you good fortune

E.

Well said Purple Gran. You may think it’s cold with you but imagine our foot path and road is like an ice rink! It’s dry though and we are in lockdown so not going anywhere.

Hope you are both well and enjoying your wonderful life over there. All the best. R.

The family sent pics of the 4”+ of snow you have, just glad we were there this time last year and not this. Enjoy your time there, hopefully the restrictions will lift by next month

Regarding the need for heating, this is really dependent on when your house/ Apartment was built.

We live in a newly built villa, and the temperature never ever goes below 17 degrees without heating, and a quick 10 min. Blast of heating ( heating pump through Airzone) is enough to get the place warm enough for the rest of the day. ( min. 20 degrees). So the stories that you will be freezing on the Costa Blanca are not necessarily true.

You must be one of the lucky ones! How old is your house?  Most properties coming up for sale are not new. Mist new properties close to the coast are extremely pricey while if prepared to go off piste are more affordable.

Brand new indeed, but I wanted to point out that without knowing the OP’s budget, we should not generalize.

Properties built after 2010 have much better insulation than older ones. But indeed, newly built properties do come at a price, but these prices will not go down. On the contrary.

I sincerely hope you are right. In my opinion there are far too many houses being built in the whole Torrevieja area.  It’s the law of supply and demand that dictates price and of course location.

This post that was quoted has been deleted.

A charming comment made by someone who couldn’t possibly be my grandson!

Ours was built in the seventies, we are fortunate in that our landlord fitted reverse air conditioning.  If we should visit our neighbours on the top floor during the winter, they answer the door wearing dressing gowns on top of their clothes.  As others will doubtless point out, Spanish electricity is expensive.  We expect our bill to double in January and February
