Hello Flowerlover,
When taking out Health Insurance for your residency, it must be a fully comprehensive insurance with NO copayments, and unlimited medical expenses, a Premium or Standard plan would do.
Another thing to have a look into is the Insurance companies medical network, as some companies may be very limited and you will find yourself having to drive to another town just to get a check-up.
Finally, if you are over 40 years old, I would also recommend that you get an insurance company that offer "LIFETIME COVERAGE", this means that they can't kick you out of the policy due to age, high medical expenses or serious illness. (I know of only 2 insurance agencies who do is; AXA and DKV).
While I understand you will go on the Public Health care when you can, but I would advice that, depending where you go, to pay a normal Health Insurance, as the Public system is very slow, and you could be waiting months just to get an MRI, which has happend to many people.
If you would like more advice, I would be happy to help as I work for an insurance agency through AXA.
I hope this help and you get settled in Spain.
