Hi Sue

I have done it numerous times over the years and still find the best route is the west coast route via the shuttle, we get the early morning shuttle 06:00 and drive down to Pau then through Somport Tunnel down to Villamartin, I haven't done this route through the winter as the Road over the Pyrennes could get blocked but you can go via San Sebastion and Pamplona.

Basically Calais, Abbeville, Rouen, Le Mans, Tours, Poitiers, Saintes, Bordeaux here we tail off to Pau for the night, through Somport Tunnel, Jaca, Huesca, Zaragoza, Teruel, Valencia and down to Villamartin, or winter run as I said Bordeaux, Bayonne, San Sebastion, Pamplona and pick up Zaragoza route from there.

Hope this helps....

Regards

Andrew

Hi Andrew,Yes plenty of different routes as you stated, and many different optionsI think you may mean “ west coast” route rather then east?😉👍🏻
Thanks for sharingRegardsBB

Thank you for this. Need to get en route before the weather changes hopefully. Unfortunately waiting for an operation date till we can go. But its all things to take into account.

Hi Andrew

I'm driving to the UK in March 2022 heading North towards Pamplona / Bordeaux / Poitiers / Tours / Dreux / Evereux / Dieppe.

Its a route I've used many times over the years and its a great drive if you´re not in a rush. The tolls are normally around 35€, but I was wondering if I should stick to the main toll roads all the way as I´m travelling mid March and not sure about weather conditions. (Iv'e only previously driven it during the summer)

I'd be grateful to hear from anyone who's done this route in March

Thanks

Gary

Hi Gary

Mid summer its only €110 through France from Calais, personally I would stick with the toll for what your saving in tolls you will be burning a good percentage in fuel the route your taking.

Andrew

Morning Sue, we've only done it twice so came to it as complete newbies. Both times we used the tunnel as it is so quick and easy with all facilities either side for dogs and their humans.

The first time we tried to avoid tolls and booked dog friendly hotels in advance. Hated it.

The second time we stuck to the E15 route the whole way, paid all the tolls and booked hotels as we went depending on how tired we were. There was so much choice on Booking.com and we stayed in the basic level ones. This suited us much better and the only thing we planned was to hit Paris in the early hours and at 4am we sailed through (late June). All the motorway services had exercise areas for the dogs and we chose hotels just off the motorway.

Lots of good tips already given and I'd only add that you may need snow chains;

I travel alone with dog and done it many times both via tolls and toll free as much as possible. Always use Portsmouth and over night crossing for pet friendly cabin over night as I come down from  Newcastle. I prefer to use motorways and pay tolls for speed and convenience. I usually cross at Irun and use A1/A15/ A23 to Valencia. I over night at Bayonne or Bordeaux or Irun. The ACE hotel at Bordeaux Cestas is good so are Urdanibia Park or Ibis at Irun. At Bayonne Premiere Classe is bit down market but OK nearby Ibis is better. Both close to decent bistros all mentioned pet friendly. If I want to stop after that I use hotels at Monreal del Campo though with a bit of a detour hotel at Montanenos just after Teruel is pretty and food is great. Must recommend the service station at jnct 209 on A23 for food. Tapas are great and had pigs ears last time (sounds odd but taste superb).

Yes but not used it as not sure my dog could cope with the long boat trip. She is very self conscious(nuts really) over certain things but loves car trips
