Hi everyone,

I’m British with a British driving licence which I’m in the process of changing to a Spanish licence.

Last month I brought my little LHD Italian car from Italy to Spain where I lived for many years. I assume the Italian number plate needs to be changed to a Spanish one but I’m not sure how to go about it or if there is someone around that would prepare the paperwork for me.

Has anybody got any suggestions?

Hopefully you have a COC for your vehicle, otherwise the process will be extremely expensive. Then, you need proof of ownership. Next step is obtention of tax exemption due to change of residence. Then pay road tax at your council. and then finally go to "Trafico" an get your plates. Seems easy but it isn't.

Thank you Killjoy,

The car is 8 years old so not considered a new buy, lol, and we have a very recent MOT which is transcribed on the car logbook. It was bought in Europe and we are just checking out the other paperwork. Thank you for your help.

I've recently re-registered my UK car onto Spanish plates. I used a company recommended by Jim Taylor who used to post here and was highly respected. Maybe give them a call and ask your questions given your car is coming into Spain via a different route? The person who heads up the business is called Leigh Blann his contact number is 671 60 85 03 and his website is http://www.spanish-number-plates.com/ he works with a guy called Graham who is also highly competent.

Leigh seems to be a level headed operator and I am considering bringing in my other car from the UK using his company once again.

I have no affiliation to them other than being a recent customer of theirs.

Thank you, I did contact Leigh, we thought we did everything correctly then we found out that from January 2020, we had to de-register the car in Italy before bringing it to Spain.

I contacted the DVLA equivalent in Italy and they said to get an agency to do it for me as I have to send the Italian number plates to them, they will issue me with temporary plates so I can travel and modify my insurance coverage. They will then add on to the log book that the car is now de-registered in Italy. I have to give this to the Spanish Authorities. Sounds easy, if expensive, but the Italian Office is working with reduced hours and staff, the agencies don’t want to queue up for hours so I’m waiting to see what we are going to do.

Hi Janice ,

i have just read your comments on reregistering an Italian Car into Spain and contacting the Italian  DVLA.

do you have any details which can help me as i need to try and get the same process completed as yourself. The agency contacts could be useful

Hi there,

Obviously you need to contact an agency where your car is registered. In my case I just looked for an agency that did driving lessons and auto paperwork in Sardinia, in the town where I lived and registered the car.

I phoned them to see if they could do this, sent the number plates and what passes for a logbook in Italy, and other necessary documents, sent them by courier from Spain, sent a bank transfer to the agency to cover costs and they did the rest, going to PRA on my behalf.

They sent me back the paperwork necessary to re-register the car here. My car had already undergone the ITV here in Spain but I had to do it again using the new Spanish number plate. Leigh Blann helped me do all the essential paperwork on the Spanish side. You will find his details further back on this thread.

Good luck.
