Hi everyone, read a post recently on Internet from Courier Company stranded in Santander due to customs changes in excise on transporting household goods. We have been transporting our own belongings prior to Brexit without problems, but it appears that customs taxes and import duty are now a problem we need more information on. We are and will stay non residents and need to continue doing this. Any advice and information would be appreciated.

Regards

Pauline

Hi Pauline,

This is the info for moving personal belongings into the UK from overseas:

https://www.gov.uk/moving-to-uk

In order to move your belongings from the UK to Spain, I would expect you would need to look on Spain's equivalent website.

Kind regards,

Kim

Hi Kim,

Thanks for replying but that's bringing goods into UK not taking them over to Spain. I, ve been on lots of sites incl. Gov. UK but there's no mention of taking own goods over in own vehicle but much on commercially carrying items by Companies. Have even rung Way2go who now only offer 1way vehicle hire in case they had info and a Courier service but they could only tell me how they were affected and said probably no differrence for self transportation from prior to Brexit but I need to be sure if there are now import duties and taxes to pay and declarations to do before I do it again. I guess I, ll have to try Spain's Government's website but my Spanish is not that good. There was a posting of a Courier on Facebook who was stranded for 2days at Santander as he had to pay extra taxes and import duties for his 3 clients loads and had to get his clients to transfer him the monies. Alarm bells rung hence my posting this.

Stay safe.

Kind regards

Pauline

Yes, Pauline, I did say that the link related to moving personal belongings into the UK from overseas and that I expect you would need to look on Spain's equivalent website for moving goods in the other direction.

Kind regards,

Kim

Pauline, Don’t know the precise details but in theory rules will be the same as for us when we brought personal items from USA , during first year of residency personal goods were ( with various restrictions ) basically duty free. After that as third country nationals just your regular suitcase and effects, all else is generally restricted / chargeable.

Hi Ian

Happy New year have you settled in well now and enjoying your new life? Thanks for reply, as I don't intend to apply for residency I now wonder if that is also a criteria to get goods in free now. You are right I was requesting replies from Uk residents bringing over own goods and what differrence Brexit had made but of course all 3rd country nationals would be in same boat too. Everyday I read something else that ruins our plans for a peaceful life due to Brexit, which at least probably hasn't affected you so much as already a 3rd country national. More research needed.

Stay safe in Caudete

Kind regards

Pauline.

Happy New Year , let’s hope this one is better !

All well here after rocky start , now with new solar system and commercial generator backup things are good !

You are now basically tourists ..... with all applicable restrictions , I’m still chuckling about the poor lorry driver whose ham sandwich was confiscated in Holland - unfortunately we are used to those types of restrictions , I remember when we would eat up bananas just before US border when driving back from Mexico or give food away to the hustlers selling stuff as we were in the que to cross the border.

I wonder how all the van n man haulage folks will manage , or maybe demand will now drop for UK removals.

Take care

:-)

Ian, yes the posting I read on the net about a Courier being stranded at Santander for 2 days at customs because he didn't have the paperwork for excess duty for his clients belongings and therefore had to get the clients to transfer him monies does show there are taxes to pay. It will scupper fly by night White Van men for sure.

Glad to hear things are smooth for you wish I could say same after agonising  best part of last year over "do we don't we" over residency but as we couldn't drive our UK van over to reduce the belongings in our UK home that criteria made us reject residency. So it's now ironic maybe we can't transport as we had been doing due to extra financial costs it is our final nail in coffin. I had already accepted how we could still use healthcare in both countries but the van transportation was the stumbling block. Oh dear, have to continue with more research to get definitive answer.

We were over late 2020, returned to UK end November and agonised right upto last minute. Maybe now we chose wrong decision as more issues are coming to light.

We too had a timeshare for 12 yrs in Florida and remember stuffing ourselves with last minute fruit from baggage before check in. Happy Days!

Stay warm and safe

Kind regards

Pauline

Just updating info I have researched up to now but its not over yet as the outcome is so biased against non resident 2nd home owners. If you are using a Haulage Company they will give you a total cost of the job including all customs paperwork and costs(customs handling charges) providing you are a resident and you are now moving your own personal belongings to your new primary residence. There's no import duty to pay but the costs have increased greatly according to a well respected haulier. If you are non resident and therefore not changing primary residence there is a 21% iva to pay on the value of load and must be paid upfront and a customs handling charge plus procedures for importing, not at all easy for the man with van doing it privately. The haulier will cost this non resident job up on transport without customs involvement which you have to obtain all the necessary procedures and paperwork via customs forwarding agents. I have not received any info on how cars with belongings in the back, roomy 4x4's stuffed up, and motor homes, how they are also affected. There will still be many self drive people especially pet owners, and I, m surprised no one since the 1/1/21 has any experience to share. The extra iva will no doubt help to pay for the cost of covid. It appears all EU borders are making life extra difficult to UK drivers. Non residents planning on permanency in the future will be hounded by the new rules. I, ll update again if I get any info worth sharing
