We are moving to Alcoy early next year and intend to drive our car down to use instead of buying a new one. We have a Dodge Challenger 5.7 litre of which the CO2 emissions are deemed to be quite high, a local company in Murcia has quoted us 4,500 euros to put it through it's registration and test.  Could any one tell us if this is excessive please?

Kind Regards

Nigel

You can do it for less. Most important: get a so called COC (Certificate of Conformity) from your dealer. Then you will have to exchange the front light assemblies to meet Spanish traffic ruling. Bringing the vehicle as part of your hosehold excempts from import duties. A "gestoria" should not cost more than 300,- (max.) to take care of all the registration paperwork. In any case you have 6 months to do this.

You will only get a COC if the car was built for sale in another country in the EU, in other words homologated for tge European market.

If it's a US import then you may find that the €4500 you've been quoted to register it in Spain will seem an absolute bargain.

To qualfy as personal effects exempt from tax I believe you have 60 days not 6 months.

We brought a USA-built Honda Accord Saloon to Spain. It had previously been registered in Britain.

North American Accords are very different from European models, so we had no Certificate of Conformity.

Fortunately, the Coupe version of our car (same drive-train etc. as ours) was imported to Europe for a while and sold in small numbers, and the registration authorities used the Coupe stats to register our car.

I have seen a few Chargers and Challengers knocking about in Europe, so they might have been imported to a European country, in which case you might get the same dispensation that we did.

Good luck.

Hello Jim

Thanks for the link, whilst I am waiting for Spanish Number Plates to get back to me, do you happen to know how or have a link to how to calculate Spanish Road Tax, is it SUMA?

Cheers

Nigel

Good question Nigel, but it doesn't seem to be Suma.

I had a look at their calculator for IVTM:

https://www.suma.es/cuerpo_calc_imp.xhtml%3bjsessionid=qe0h+U9jQIoqidHW2twMPZwH

and Alcoy doesn't appear on the list, so I assume the road tax is billed direct by the town hall. Strange, because Suma collect the IBI for Alcoy.

If it's any indication, we pay €50.
