Hi Kim , I thought possibly incorrectly, that after 5 years of being a resident in Spain that you would then have full Spanish citizenship and come under their free healthcare?

Hi Mags,

No, after 5 years you can apply for permanent residency (known as "settled status" in the UK).  That's not the same as Spanish citizenship, for which you need to have lived permanently in Spain for 10 years and pass a citizenship test.

I've lived in Spain for almost 4 years, so I won't have achieved settled status until May 2021.  I don't work in Spain and I'm not UK State retirement age, so I don't qualify for an S1 yet, which is why I need private health insurance.

Kind regards,

Kim

Hi Dawn,

In order to obtain comparable quotes, you'll need to do a fair bit of legwork.  Insurance agents in Spain are tied to one insurer, so they don't act as the brokers that we're used to in the UK, who will search the whole of the market to get you the most competitive quote and product.

My husband and I are with ASSSA, aged 62 and 59 respectively, with no pre-existing conditions, and our annual premium for Standard Plus cover is Eu 1,870.  Prescription costs are not included.  I obtained quotes from 6 companies - ASSSA wasn't the cheapest, but it provided the level of cover we needed.  Our cover also includes dental check-ups.

If purchasing PHI is in support of your residency application, please note that you will have to pay the first year in full and obtain a certificate from your insurers confirming this.  Please also note that Basic cover and cover with co-payments are not sufficient for residency applications.  Once you have been resident for 1 year, you can choose to continue with your PHI cover, or apply to join the Convenio Especial, which current costs Eu 60 per person, per month, increasing to Eu 157 per person, per month at age 65.  Prescription costs are not included under the C.E., but unlike PHI, it does have the advantage of covering pre-existing conditions.

Kind regards,

Kim

Thanks for all your information on this subject Kimmy11.   If it helps others I've got a quote from ASSA a few weeks ago for my husband and myself, think the prices have gone up since Kimmy got hers.  We are 50 + 58 years so fall into the same age bracket.  So for the Plus package I think you said you had Kimmy it is 1311 euro per person (I was told these prices included IVA).

I did also ask which of these was suitable for residency and they said "This policy is the one to use if you need residencia any level is suitable. "

.........

Standard Cover Policy: This policy offers very good cover, which includes covering all specialists and doctors as an outpatient, unlimited for operations including medication, 30 massage and physiotherapy sessions per year, Emergencies are also covered from day 1 of the insurance.  Dental treatment: check-up, tooth clean, extraction and X Ray is included free of charge.

Plus cover Policy: This policy includes well woman/man check-ups, among its cover, specific preventive medicine programmes for men and women without pre-established age.  For example, this would cover a check-up from a Urologist with scan and blood test and cardiologist with ECG for men and bone density scan, mammogram, ultrasould and a full gynaecological check-up for woman.  Dental treatment: check-up, tooth clean, extraction and X Ray is included free of charge.

Master cover Policy: This policy offers among other advantages, unlimited stay hospitalisation with medication included, internal prostheses/replacements. Check-up also includes preventive colon cancer checks and also includes the dental treatment.

Please inform him that we work on a voucher system.  Each policy is issued with a book of 5 free vouchers.  Every time they visit a doctor or specialist or have treatment, they will need to present a voucher.  When they have used all your free vouchers additional voucher books (containing 10 vouchers) can be then be purchased at a cost of 20 euros.  This system works out much more cost effective than many of the other Health Policies.  Whereby clients are asked to pay co-pago payments every time they have a medical treatment or consultation, which can be anything from 8 euros to a GP check-up – up to 38 euros for a scan!

Also, we extend two important guarantees which are unique to ASSSA:

No premium increase due to age.
* No cancellation due to age or policy usage

Please find herewith the total annual premium for each of them on our different ASSSA levels.

ASSSA STANDARD:

852.00 pp

ASSSA PLUS:
1311.00 pp

ASSSA MASTER:
1612.00 pp

JillS my quote of a few days ago from Asssa was the same as yours - its a fair bit higher than the one I got in July 2018 - so their prices must have gone up.

Have you asked Gran Alacant insurances for a quote - look at right of the page they have an advertiser banner. My understanding is that they resell for Salus - which is another healthcare insurance provider.

Also are you using someone to complete your residency papers/ book and attend the meeting, translate for you when the time comes? I have run the quotes I've had past the person I am using to see whether the product is suitable for residency applications and he is happy to represent it when the time comes.

Thanks Lancealot - I've not tried Grand Alicant, but i may well do to have a comparison.  But yes, we will look to make sure it's ok for residency before we commit to it.

Alfonso who works there has now assured me it's okay for residency and I have no reason to doubt him :)

Lancelot, if you don't mind me asking, how much were you quoted for both of you (what was your age bracket as that seems to be a factor too).

thanks
