Of course, funny story, driving down to Portsmouth the first time to come across from Spain, fell asleep and woke up to find that my husband was almost at Plymouth, the horror of that must be seared into my consciousness, we just made it in the nick of time to get the ferry at Portsmouth.

We have driven down through France and into Spain many times, when my children were younger we always used Campanile hotels, close to motorways, restaurant, plenty of choice for food, just get up have breakfast and go, very clean, tidy rooms, my children loved them.
The best way I have found is to get someone else to do the driving!

We travelled to Calpe ( just north of Benidorm) from Calais at the start of January. We did it over 4 days, with 2 dogs, but am sure you can do it quicker. We stopped at Troyes, Montelimar, and Tarragona (3 nights) on the way - using toll roads. Not cheap but easy as not much traffic, except around Lyon. If you are travelling with kids you definitely need to build in stops. Our motels were mainly Ibis - cheap and cheerful.
