I should have started this long ago but unfortunately didn't and unfortunately do not speak Spanish. My partner and I have a rented apartment in Benidorm and registered on Padron in July. We have sufficient funds in Sabadell, and on advice (of a very useless and expensive lawyer) we got Health Insurance with DKV - paying monthly. On the advice of the lawyer off we went to the police station at the end of July only to be told the system had just changed and we had the wrong forms (EX 18 now should be EX 20) We are now desperately trying to remedy the situation but everyone is telling us different things - e.g. we need an appointment for NIE first but there is none available. Someone told us insurance was fine - just no appointments whilst next person said no it wasn't and we now had to apply via 3 different appointments in Alicante! Has anyone been through the new system or can help? We are quite happy to pay for help we just can't seem to find a way forward.  Thanks Jackie

I also recommend an initial consultation with the English speaking firm of Solicitors in Albir. I have used them for years.

They've helped me in all aspects of living in Spain.

If your PHI has been in force for any appreciable time it's possible it could be rejected as it needs to cover the whole of the first year.

I think most arrange for it to start to tie in with their residency appointment.

The confusion over financials stems from the Withdrawal Agreement which simply mentions 'sufficient resources' leaving it up to state authorities to assess each application individually.

It does however state that they should not be set higher than qualifying levels for social security or minimum retirement pensions where those are in effect.

Hi Jackie and John,

The confusion over financial requirements stems from the change only taking place last week.  It used to be €9,000 lump sum per person, or €750 per person, per month, for a minimum of 3 months, into a Spanish bank account.  The figures are now €5,500 lump sum per person, or €500 per person, per month for a minimum of 3 months.

Anyone who had their TIE appointment scheduled more than 2 weeks ago would have been told the higher figures.  This happened to a forum member, Peter, who has been giving some helpful updates of his recent experience - he was prepared for the higher figures, but by the time he went to his appointment, the change had been introduced and the lower amounts required.

Friends of mine had a similar experience - it seems that there was only one gestor in this area who was on the ball and alerted me to the impending changes about 10 days ago.

Kind regards,

Kim

This post that was quoted has been deleted.

Hi RayD

That is great thanks, it's fantastic to see something in writing! We are in the clear on the amount of lump sum but I'll have to wait the 3 months for it to have been in the Spanish bank, cancel down the incomprehensible DKV insurance and pay for a whole year with Sanitas or whoever and then get the 1st part of the application made electronically. In the meantime we are going to get a NIE to be on the safe side even though some people say you now don't need it - others say you do!
