Sorry tebo53 I have to disagree with you on this but it is not all cyclists who break the rules. I am a cyclist and a driver and one of the sensible ones, I abide by the rules of the road. Motorists and cyclists who don’t abide by the rules of the road are just as bad as each other.

So you have no problem with cyclists disobeying the road rules......

Can you honestly tell us all on this forum that you stop at every red light and when necessary at crossings?

Where in my post do I say there is not a problem with cyclists breaking the rules?

Cyclists and motorists who break the rules are idiots and yes I do stop at red lights and crossings when someone is crossing, as I said a lot don’t but they are the ones in the wrong, you obviously have something against all cyclists.

You have your view of this topic and I have mine, we will never agree.

Hi Steve,

Generally speaking, I haven't experienced regular law-breaking by individual cyclists in Spain, but some of the club "packs" are arrogant beyond belief.  As recently as a day last week, I went to Guardamar to walk my dog through the park.  I'd put one foot on a pedestrian crossing, but stopped because of the speed that at least a dozen cyclists in matching lycra were approaching the crossing.  The leader of the pack saw me - did he slow down?  Did he indicate to his team mates to slow down?  Nope, he took my hesitation as their right to continue without giving way.  Yet the reason I hesitated was because I could tell, at the speed they were doing, they wouldn't have been able to stop in time and it would be me and, more importantly, my woof who would have come off worse in a collision.

Does anyone know whether club cyclists have to pass a cycling proficiency test before being allowed to travel in groups?

Being both a motorist and a cyclist, my overall impression is that drivers in Spain are much more respectful of cyclists here than in the UK (and yes, I'm sure there are exceptions), but sadly some of the cycling clubs behave as if they're hunting in packs.

Kind regards,

Kim

You want to try living in our mountainous region, where access  to our property is a 9 km winding lane  with very poor visibility. The professional pelotones from everywhere use these lanes as practice routes, causing fear and anguish to those of us trying to access our houses or alternatively the local village.  It’s impossible to pass them due to the narrow lane and the fact that they rarely ride single file.

But they are infinitely more considerate than the cycling holiday makers!!! They have no idea at all, weaving all over the lane as they struggle to cope!

And yesterday I had a narrow escape by standing on my brakes when some idiot in a huge Toyota type truck came tearing around the bend on my side of the road whilst overtaking a peloton at speed on a lane where he could not physically see around the bends, he sailed past me at speed., missing my paintwork by microns whilst the cyclists shook their heads and raised their eyebrows in sympathy!

it might also have to do with location; ie. Benidorm.. In Valencia center or in the "burbs" cyclists seem to abide by the traffic lights... There it is the opposite, it is the walkers that are normally "in the wrong"

I wrote a similar post a few months ago. What annoys me is they don't use the cycle lanes that have been made for them. I opened my car door and cyclists was in my blind spot and nearly took my door off, this was on the main road through Albir right opposite the the lane cycle lane that goes all the way through the town. 3 days after I moaned about it someone was knocked off their bike by a car, they were getting no sympathy from me.

What a strange perspective…

you opened your door without observing if it was safe to do so and you’re the one complaining 🤔

Kimmy, how is this any different than stepping out in front of a car when they don’t have time to stop?

… you have to use the crossing responsibly too.

Plenty of times I have looked to cross a road at a marked crossing and a motorist has failed to stop

Plenty of times I have been out cycling and a pedestrian has stepped off the pavement without any consideration to what may be coming, putting me at risk of injury.

I think the ‘haters’ on here really do need to ‘get out more’, preferably on a bicycle

😂
