Hi Jack, l have an Irish passport but live in the UK. Im 70 but if l move to Benidorm would l qualify for Spanish (NHS) health care or would l need to have private insurance? I have no health issues at the moment. Many regards, Seamus.

Im not sure you may have to live there for 5yrs but being a pensioner you might qualify check with the Spanish authorities as they might claim ant expenses incurred fro the country where you paid your NI Contributions and Taxes! Sorry that's the best I can do for now, but if I get any more information I'll let you know!

Regards Jack

Hi Seamus,

Where did you make your National Insurance contributions when you were working - UK or Ireland?

If it was in the UK, you should contact the Overseas Healthcare Team at the NHS Business Services Agency to see if you qualify for a Form S1 - you can email them at:

[email protected]

If you made your contributions in Ireland, you'll find the contact details for applying for an S1 here:

Healthcare Co-operation across EU States - HSE.ie

The S1 allows you to transfer your healthcare rights to Spain, so no need for private health insurance, and you would need the S1 for your Spanish residency application.  Fortunately, as you have an Irish passport, you can do so as an EU citizen - you lucky thing!

Kind regards,

Kim

As Ireland are still in the EU, therefore you are a EU citizen I believe your NI contributions would be transferred to Spain making you eligible for health care in Spain! Don't take this as gospel check it out first  Seamus! Find out more on the S1 form!! I'm new to all this myself as I've only just bought an apartment in Benidorm last month, but I'm flying back on the 4th June for 9 days to sort some of my own stuff out and I would be only to happy to meet up during that time to see if I can be of any assistance!

I believe you would qualify for the free Spanish Health service but you need to have residency and get an S1 form so your NI contributions can be transferred to Spain! Check all this before you do anything! If you are still in the UK check with the Spanish Embassy/Consulate in Manchester or London, which ever is closest to where you live in case you have to make a visit to them!
