Hello all, I am a Brit based in Western Spain, and me and my fiancée are thinking of moving either to Benidorm or Torrevieja in September.

I would be most grateful for any information regarding some questions we have. We are essentially looking for a more British area of Spain to live in, after 15 years based in a totally Spanish area, We would like now a British feel, either Benidorm or Torrevieja. After having looked at many estate agent websites, it seems Benidorm is a lot more expensive to rent than Torrevieja. You can get many rentals at 500 euros per month (2 bedrooms) in Torrevieja whereas in Benidorm minimum 800 euros a month for 2 bedrooms. A major problem we have also found is that nearly all rentals in Benidorm are not all year round but seasonal. Torrevieja on the other hand is all year round.

Can anybody tell us what differences exist between Benidorm and Torrevieja? Work wise, i imagine there is more work in Benidorm? I am an English Teacher.

It is a tough decision to make, but Torrevieja does look financially cheaper property wise, but is it nice enough?

Many thanks

I live in Benidorm and yes rentals have become expensive but I'm curious to know how you formed the opinion there are few all year rentals? There is a plethora of properties for long term rent currently on the market but perhaps you're looking on the wrong websites. I have used the following website and successfully secured long term rentals advertised on it. If you havent already done so maybe you should give it a try:

www.idealista.com

Torrevieja is a working Spanish town with over 50% of the population being Spanish and the rest international - last figures I saw were about 10% British residents.  Yes, it is also a resort, but again at an international level and with a lot of Spanish holidaying there.  The international schools are more towards the urbanisations in the area.  Orihuela Costa (just south of Torrevieja) is much more touristy and has a much higher English speaking population than Torrevieja.  Easy commute distance but short supply of residential lets and would cost more in rent than Torrevieja too.

You can't really compare the two towns as Benidorm promotes itself as a resort and appears it is particularly loved by some Brits.

Best option is to visit both areas and see which you prefer.

I also live in Benidorm and agree with John that there are many long term rentals, at much less than €800 per month.

I have live here for nearly 10 years and love the place. Where I live is just on the outskirts of the entertainment area of the new town, so a 10 minute walk takes me from a quiet but busy expat area to the hustle and bustle of evening entertainment.

My sister lives just outside of Torrevieja and it's not an area I'd like to live, personally I find the place dirtier and more cramped than Benidorm.

I don't know about teaching jobs but it's unlikely that you would find any other type of work as there are many unemployed people here.

I'd be happy to help with any other queries.

Hi many thanks for the reply John. Ironically idealista.com is the website that keeps throwing up limited monthly or seasonal rentals rather than all year rentals. if you know of any other websites or people who are looking for tenants all year round  (2 bedrooms ) around 650 euros a month, please let me know. The very few yearly ones I have seen seem to be way more than 800 a month, maybe those are the all year ones?

Many thanks Dave for the info, much appreciated. I am an English teacher, so far had offers in Benidorm academies, but not an offer yet in Torrevieja which looks like the most affordable really. In any case, I should be teaching online by then

Many thanks Steve for the reply. Could you please tell me how about finding all year rentals in Benidorm for 600 to 650 euros a month (2 bedrooms)? I have tried idealista, and unless you pay more than 800 a month, nearly all the adverts say seasonal rentals only. I appreciate any help

Your best bet is to come to Benidorm and look in all the local estate agencies windows. Plenty advertised but you need to sign up same day otherwise it will be gone.

As you understand, Benidorm long term rentals are in high demand but long term rentals are available.

As always - it is best to have feet on the ground looking for "for rent" signs on buildings, terraces or in the real estate companies windows in the area in which you want to move to.

As to the difference between the 2 ;

1 is a resort that offers cheap packages for a booze filled couple of days, weekend and/or week and the other is were the expat locals moved there for the cheap booze making it one of the least prosperous -GDP- cities in Spain; sometimes trading places with Benidorm up or down in the rankings ... Torrevieja did ship a lot of salt this year though...

 My opinion. :)

Thanks so much for that info. I get what you mean, Benidorm is more parties and booze, Torrevieja is quieter. Would you say Torrevieja has a smaller Brit community compared to Benidorm or similar?

As for rent, it does look like you get more for your money in Torrevieja, i have seen good two bedroom apartments at 500 monthly, that would be unheard of in Benidorm based on my research on apartments
