UK Govt indicated IDPs would be necessary post Brexit before Brexit day in Jan 2021. As other posters have said they are cheap and from post office. Remember different IDPs are required in France and Spain as each country is a member of a different UK IDP agreement.

If demanded by the particular hire company their rules trump all.

Which proves that you must ALWAYS read the T&C's.

Absolutely right to read T & C's. Looked to see carbrokers prices and they made no mention of IDL. Then looked at actual hire firm being recommended  and there was the requirement for the IDL. Poor service from the Carbrooker firm in my opinion!

Hi,

Sorry to hear your bad experience with the hire car company. OK Mobility, RecordGo, Centauro and Firefly do not ask uk license holders to provide an IDP..I doubt many others do either, can you please name and shame the cowboys you had difficulty with?

Not required according to the uk gov website

UK government has no jurisdiction in EU unless agreements were made with individual EU states that IDLs we’re not needed. So the rule is don’t leave a club then expect to continue having the benefits of the club you no longer subscribe to.

The websites of DGT Tráfico, Moncloa and the Spanish Ministry do not mention the International Driving Licence (IDL) at all so I believe it is not required

Regardless of the requirements, would it not be prudent to just have the IDP ‘just in case’. In the scheme of things it’s not a big deal and eliminates any ambiguity on the matter. Just my tuppence worth & not based on any reasoning other than common sense.

Absolutely. As soon as Brexit happened I read through all my insurance policies, health, driving, mobile phone, travel, property, contents, accident, IHIC card and made sure I got docs and made changes to all the things this government had not warned or prepared us for. Better safe than sorry.

I’m afraid I have used OK, Record Go, Gold car and Firefly in the last 3 months and the T&Cs on the voucher for every one of them said I needed a IDP but none of them have asked for it on pick up…

Hi

I bought one near end of 2019 because we were going into Brexit,  did not need it .We bought one this year for our trip as we were going to rent a  car, but we did not rent in the end as cars were expensive, I have read on the forum someone was denied a rental because they did not have ...

...the licence, they are five pound  each at the post office, take passport photo and driving licence, it last for a year, its better to be safe than sorry. ,

Sorry for the stupid question in advance but did you get the EU license in Spain or British post office? Just looked up that you can get international driving permit at post office in Britain. Answered my own question 😂🙄

I only use Firefly now but they have never asked.
