My husband and I are considering Benissa (not directly on the beach) country side for a vacation home. He is Spanish from Elda but never had a vacation home. So we have visited Spain a lot. We currently live in US. But we are interested in info about living in Benissa; crime, break-in issues, is it uncomfortably humid, any problems that people have encountered?? Appreciate your thoughts.

Hi Jrmj

I have a second home in Moraira; very close to Benissa

I’m unclear from your post if you know Benissa well, or not at all. It’s more or less mid way between Moraira and Calpe and is a very traditional, small Spanish town. It’s well served by supermarkets; Consum, Mercadona, Aldi, Overseas supermarket. I always feel it has a nice vibe to it and I understand there’s usually something going on. It also has a micro brewery, something that we’ll be trying as soon as we get back 😉

The road winds down to Benissa costa through lovely countryside. The villas are generally quite high end and well spaced

I’ve never heard that it is subject to more crime or break - ins than any other areas. I would say that you’d need to take reasonable measures to secure your property, as you would anywhere.

I think heat and humidity’s a problem, wherever you are (possibly not the mountains) in Spain during July and August. Many Brits, if they are able, depart for cooler shores  during these months

You obviously have an advantage, as your husband is Spanish. Enjoy your search. This is, in my opinion, a lovely part of Spain 🤪🥂

The new bypass for the N332 will soon be complete and this will transform the centre of Benissa by removing most of the traffic that currently passes through the town.  The old part, just off the main road, is already lovely with a much greater proportion of the houses restored than other towns in the region.  Having the big new shops close to the centre is quite unusual and a bonus in my opinion.

It should be a great base for living and getting around the area, especially with the AP7 motorway nearby and now toll-free.  Someone told me this area is popular with wealthy footballers. Not sure if that's true or not, but may account for the rather high price of big villas in the surrounding area.
