Hi
My ex also refused to fly (to see her Dad in a village near Valencia)
We travelled by train instead. On the first occasion we took Eurostar to Paris, then a sleeper to Barcelona where we stayed for one day/night, and then got the train to Valencia.
The second time, we took Eurostar, then a train to Montpellier and stayed for a couple of nights before onwards to Valencia. On the way back we stopped at Perpignan instead of Montpellier.
The stops were purely to see a bit more of the world, but I think it was possible to do the whole trip in one day.
In your case, you could get a train from Valencia to Alicante, and then the tram to Calpe.
We found the trains comfortable and very good value. In planning the trips, I took careful note of precisely when the tickets went on sale which was always midnight on whatever day. I then logged in just before midnight and got the cheapest tickets, usually in first class.
Btw - this was over 20 years ago, some of the trains may be quicker these days!
Cheers
Steve
