Hello,
I'm a bit confused by your question. What type of residencia do you have if not a TIE? Did you just get the old style card last year ? If so, the guide below will talk you through the whole process but the forms, of course, are in spanish .
I don't know what an NIE card is, it's a Foreigners identification number ( usually printed on a sheet of A4 paper) unless this has changed recently.

It is an A4 sheet and thanks for the link
Keith
Sorry it does not sound as though you have residency as by your description you don’t have the green card, that would have been issued before TIE was in force, or the TIE.
Where did you apply for your residency as appointments were hard to come by in some places toward the end of 2020 as people were rushing to get them done before the end of year deadline?
If this is the case and you don’t actually have residencia then you would unfortunately have to return to the UK to start the process of applying for the relevant visa, unless I am misreading the situation.

Hi Keith,
Unless the format of NIEs (your unique tax registration number) have changed recently, it will be a white, A4 sheet of paper. If your residency pre-dates 6 June 2020, you should also have a green, credit-card size "Certificado de Registro". If you applied for residency after 6 June last year, you should have received a TIE, which indicates that you are protected by the Brexit 'Withdrawal Agreement'. If you do have a green Certificado de Registro card (which many people, especially the Spanish, incorrectly call the "NIE") then yes, you can exchange it for a TIE card - follow my step-by-step guide:
Kind regards,
Kim

The difference between applying for an NIE or for an old green residencia are as follows
Both require form filling and proof of payment.
To obtain an NIE number, you basically just needed to produce your passport and a photo
To obtain the old style green credit card residencia as well as your passport & photo you would have needed your NIE certificate, proof of income, healthcare and padron
If you are in possession of just an NIE certificate (the A4 sheet of paper) it looks as though you’re residing in Spain illegally as mentioned by the previous posters.
I would suggest that you contact a gestor as soon as possible as the documentation you will need to produce will now be quite complicated. You will require proof that you were living in Spain prior to the withdrawal agreement, to enable you to begin a residency application in Spain. You will require proof of private healthcare, being registered on the padron, proof of expenditure in Spain all dated prior to 31 Dec 2020. As well as meeting the current income requirements.
If this isn’t possible you will need to return to the U.K. to obtain a NLV before you can commence a residency application at the foreigners office in Spain.

Yes a friend of ours also just missed out on the TIE card and received the old style residency card without the photo.
You can do it yourself and there's a guide on this website, the cost is around 12 euro. However, it's far easier to get a gestor on board and save the hassle. Uma at https://www.getlegalinspain.com/ helped us with our driving licences and wasn't too expensive.
BTW you don't have to change just yet but it does make it easier when you re enter Spain.
Good luck
***EDIT just looked up Uma's fees and it's 90 euros all inclusive, which isn't too bad.
