Driving or buying a vehicle
Hi
We are currently in the process of buying a holiday home and would like to leave a car there for my children's use
What is the legal process
Hi, its the car that is insured in Spain rather than the person - so as long as you give them permission to drive, all should be OK.
Just check the age restrictions with your insurance company to make sure.
Hope this helps

Am I right in thinking that after 6 months it needs to be on spanish registered plates
Ah, are you talking about driving a UK registered car over and leaving it there - if that is the case, then yes you only get a short period of time to change to spanish plates and change the lights etc, which can be costly.
But 2ndhand spanish cars are also quite expensive

Thank you
I have looked at the spanish second hand market and it's virtually non existent
I have a spare car in the UK but its not worth the cost of registering it in spain and its right hand drive

coches.net has many secondhand cars listed Eric. Some are pretty cheap too. Buying this way can save a lot of money but you’d need to either be handy with cars yourself or have a mechanic with you to check the mechanics of the car out. Also the red tape in Spain is smothering to a private individual & you’ll need to have good Spanish knowledge to check out the paperwork.
You’d need to be sure the owner has paid the road tax or you may be liable, to check the log book, check there are no outstanding payments on it. You’ll need to sign an agreement with the owner. Check the car has current ITV (MOT). There’ll be the visit then of course to the Traffic Department “Jefatura de Trafico” where there’ll be a transfer of ownership to be filled out & signed.
If you have someone in Spain familiar with this whole procedure it’ll be ok but if not I’d say definitely hire a Gestor. They should be well used to this process doing it all the time and cut right through the red tape.
Enquire what their fee will first. Most are very reasonable. They will accompany you both in the purchase, will know what is needed to transfer ownership, what agreement to sign and go to the Traffic Department to carry out the transfer with you.
All this red tape puts a lot of people off buying privately and they head to secondhand car dealers. They will do the paperwork for you but as you already know the price for older used cars is crazy. Many of these cars would be heading for a car crusher in the UK. Best of luck.

I have a low mileage 7 seater diesel in the UK do you think it would be worth registering in Spain

Have a word with Leigh Blann at https://www.spanish-number-plates.com/
We used him to matriculate or UK car onto Spanish plates when our return ferry was cancelled. He's very good and will give you advice and an individual quote. Please be aware that since Brexit you may be charged customs fees and import duty and it could be better buying a 2nd hand Spanish car instead.
We used to bring our UK car over to Spain for our use when we visited and insured it with a Spanish insurance company. However, It was a bind to have to bring it back every year for it's MOT.

Hi, new to here and looking at relocating from the UK to Spain, Castalla / Tibi area. we are in the early stages and have already gathered information on the process. One question I am unsure on is driving in Spain. As we understand it, we can use our UK driving licences for 6 months. After which what happens? It seems the UK government and the Spanish government are in talks to enable a smooth transfer from a UK licence to a Spanish one, but that hasn’t happened yet. As it stands, do we have to go through a driving test after our 6 months is up?
Thank you
Jackie
