Hi I have been doing this trip for 15 years, and without doubt the shortest and cheapest route is via Alcoy, Zarragoza, Huesca, Jaca, Somperet Tunnel, into France via Oloron, Dax, Bordeaux, Angouleme, pick up toll south of Poitiers come off toll north of Tours then go via Chatteaudun etc, total c...

...ost in tolls is 25 euros to Calais and saves approx. 100 miles in distance, time approx 20 hours from Alicante, if you need me to give you exact road numbers etc for full journey please ask, believe me this is far and away the best route, i have met up with many drivers over the years and they agree with me this is the best route

hi as you mentioned can you please advise of full route thanks.

Hi Mike, I found this route with trial and error at i1stage i was doing it twice a year and got cheesed off with the extortionate tolls it finished up costing me approx 180 euros in tolls from Calais to Alicante, i will assume you are starting at Dieppe

Take N27 THEN A151, 150 to Rouen

A13 Towards Vernon and Evreux

A154 Evreux Toll 2.10 euros

N154 Dreux

N12 Dreux

D828 Chartres

N154   N1154    D910 SIGNS TO TOURS

N10 Chateaudun [ I would normally stop over here] AT Logis hotel on N10

Keep on N10 to Tours

Pick up toll Motorway north of Tours Come off South of Poitiers and Pick up N10 To Bordeaux  Toll here 12 euros

Keep on Bordeaux ring road and pick up A63 towards Bayonne

Come off at junction 12 to Dax toll 3.70 euros

D947 TO DAX and follow signs for Pau and Oloron st Marie for about 40 miles

Then D2 Then D936 TO OLoron

N134 Towards Jaca and Spain

Through the Somport Tunnel this goes through the Pyrennes and is about 7 miles long but no toll

In Spain N330 A23 To Zaragoza

A23 To Teruel and Valencia

South of Valencia A7 To Alcoy and Alicante

Although the stretch from Dax to Jaca is country roads but very scenic, it saves about 100 miles on journey plus the tolls and it does not take any longer than going via San Sebastion the journey normally costs me appox 130 euros plus the hotel costs and ferry

But do not recommend this route December to February it can get snowed up

How long have they been doing this Nicola?

I tend to slow down when I see the signs but when I drive thru Spain from San Sebastian I nail it so surprised I've not been nicked

Hi, To all you would be Lewis Hamiltons be aware Spain have just invested in a large number of the latest speed cameras that are so small they can be fitted on top of crash barriers and can detect speeding both ways, and can be moved about and cannot be detected by sat navs, they can also get your U K address via DVLA, The Guardia can also access DVLA records from there cars,  you have been warned they do not mess around

This is good to know. When I drive I usually hit San Sebastian/Pamplona at about 3am so I am nailing it 100mph+ as there are no cars on the road.

I slow when I see the camera signs but if they are using other modes of recording speed I need to be aware

Hi Forum Followers

We are driving from Santander to Formentera Del Segura tomorrow so I’ve left it a bit late to ask but......viamichelin offers three routes and I’m wondering which is best?? We can go via Madrid or Zaragoza, does anyone have experience of either??

Gerri x

Hi Gerri.

Best route is to head for Burgos, then down past Madrid and on down towards Alicante.

If you go for "no tolls" you won't have any problems, and you will still go around Madrid, not through it, but I tend to pay the toll of around €21 between Santander and Burgos, because at that time I'm keen to "get on with it". If you prefer not to pay, the old road's not too bad.

Dear Geoff

Thanks for replying so quickly👍🏻 I’m happy to pay any amount of tolls to make life easier but hubby thought Zaragoza looked best and I preferred Madrid so you’ve swayed it👏🏻👏🏻

Best wishes

Gerri

Ok Gerri, great. In that case, you might want to also pay the 3 or 4 Euros to use the motorway around Madrid too. I've never really worked out whether it's beneficial or not! Never been held up on either route.

The whole trip takes about 8 - 9 hours, and I've never been held up anywhere, the roads are lovely. I did do it in 7 hours once when I had a bit of an emergency, but I was watching the postbox for weeks after in case of a fine!

Geoff.
