If you choose somewhere within easy driving or public transport distance of Alicante airport you can travel back and forth between Spain and the UK very easily and cheaply with Ryanair, easyJet and Jet2 serving regional airports all over the UK.  You can then easily stay within your 90 day l...

Denia would be too far for me, so maybe look at Altea or Vilajoyosa for a similar alternative.

Thanks Gordon good advice and yes Vilajoyosa on my list 🙏

Interesting. You want to do 6 months at a time which you are no longer allowed to do as the maximum stay is 3 months or 90 days, You then have to leave for at least 90 days before coming back as the 90 in 180 days rule applies. Even EU passport holders are limited to 90 days stay unless they sign...

... on the foreigners' register but if you exceed 183 days (6 months) in one year then you become tax residents and pay income tax in Spain on all world wide income and that is for everyone.

If you left full time you would need to get a visa and, if a UK citizen, prove an income of 28,800 per year and 7,200 euro for the partner and others. Your son would find it impossible to get work in Spain as he'd need a work visa which, for Brits, is virtually impossible to get without the firm offer of a job.

As your husband is probably drawing a state pension, the UK will cover him for healthcare costs and you can become his beneficiary for healthcare if you do move over permanently, If you do then you must take into account you cannot be absent from Spain for more than a combined total of 10 months in the first 5 years which is important if you want to visit family.

Ah thanks this is great information and yes re the euros and if get NLV visa for first 5 years have to spend a minimum time in Spain

As both Marcliffe and Steve have said, it’s not quite that easy anymore to split your time the way you’ve described and as said virtually impossible to find employment unless you have an EU passport.

Temperature wise I confirm everything Steve has written.

You are asking at exactly the right time of year to do a bit of internet research on temperatures as we are probably in the few weeks when we have the coldest weather. OK don’t quote me on that, because after all you can’t really predict the weather.

Pick a number of places right down the coast from Denia to Marbella and keep a check on the temperatures at the moment. Look at hourly temperatures around 3 or 4 pm again around midnight and at 6am. You’ll see exactly how much the temperatures drop once the sun goes in. But location wise I wouldn’t expect there to be more than a couple of degrees different along coastal areas. Drive 30/45 minutes  inland and it’s a completely different picture.

Spanish houses aren’t designed to retain heat, so in the winter months it can actually feel much colder indoors, than a nice centrally heated, carpeted home in the UK. No wonder every other market stall sells slippers, those tiled floors are freezing! So as residents we spend most of the winter months sitting in a sunny spot outside - if you move inside you’d need at least an extra couple of layers as well as hiding under a cosy blanket.  So just be prepared winter is cold , except for those hours during the day, but it’s not the damp miserable cold that you have in the UK.  Probably the best thing about Spanish winters is that we don’t really get drizzle, when it rains in Spain it really rains.

When choosing your location, check the airport functions all year round.  Even though Alicante and Malaga are the busiest airports covering the Costa Blanca & Costa del Sol, youll find reduced flying options available in the winter months. Some of the smaller UK airports may reduce their flights to just once or twice a week which may not be convenient for you. Some smaller  airports  here virtually close during the winter. Again as mentioned try as find somewhere close to an airport. Do you really want to drive 2 hours to the nearest airport and 2 hours back  to collect friends and family in the knowledge that you have to do the same journey a couple of days later.

Lynn

Thanks Lynn very good advice gives me a really good insight in to how life actually is in Winter in Spain which I will be reporting back to Graham (Hubby) about!!Its one thing looking at videos on you tube of lovely villas for sale but quite another living the winter life in reality in Spain…Dogs come into it also as not many dog friendly beaches after March…Also would have to do that drive from Calais through France to Spain when ferrying them to Uk and back…Thanks for taking time to reply to my question everyone has been so very helpful on here 🙏

Just for context, driving time from Denia to Alicante airport is 1 hour. 65 miles. Could be done in slightly less if you max out the speed limits which I don't. May be too long for some but worth it to those of us who want to live in such a beautiful green landscape.

Also, Denia is a Spanish working city, it doesn't "die" in December-February, it reverts away from being heavy on tourism, but all the shops and all the non tourist reliant restaurants and bars are still open....

...

Steve

Thanks Steve yes Denia still a ‘pull’ for me but need to visit if first to ‘feel’ whether is right destination for us or not.Actually going to place in sun show in Manchester soon so will be picking their brains also : )Up to 1 hour driving to an airport to pick family up is fine for us as you say it would be worth it for the right location so would not be out off by that..I do my research thoroughly and never make any ‘rash’ decisions. This forum has been so very helpful within the 24 hours of asking thangs again everyone much appreciated ❤️

One big advantage of Vilajoyosa for visitors who can't or don't want to drive is the TRAM light railway which is very convenient and cheap for getting up and down the coast and into Alicante city.

If you can get south facing.i,m in a south facing bungalow with glass curtains on the front and have not put any heating on for the last 7 weeks my bedroom has not dropped below 21,it also helps not to have buildings in front of you,and also hills at la finca 1 mile away from me they have 1 hour less sun a day than me because of the mountain always good to take a compass when looking at property best of luck.

We moved from Scotland and bought a villa in the Denia area Sept 2023-gorgeous town/city with marina, castle and beaches plus lots of lovely surrounding smaller towns & villages.     We are 25mins inland from the coast in Benidoleig-more villa for your buck! Family and friends who have visited have loved Denia, which we settled on after 4 trips to Spain during 2022 staying in different areas in Costa Blanca South & North-some of which have been mentioned above. We felt Costa Blanca North in general & Denia area specifically just more varied & green & beautiful with mountains etc. plus most definitely not a Brits abroad type area. 1hr away from both Alicante & Valencia airports-picked up family & friends from both in recent months, plus visited & stayed in both cities.
Agree absolutely with above comments regard weather in winter! We have been surprised how cold it gets-heating is on! But still so much better than the Scottish weather of course with lots of sunny blue sky days which have been great for daytime dog walking as bearable; unlike the night walks only for our dog due to heat for the first 2/3 months after we arrived. Also local beaches, at least unofficially, welcome of dogs in winter months-just last week we had dog on a beach which was not officially dog friendly during winter months (signs on all the beaches) but lots of dog walkers on the beach both on & off lead.          We read lots of horror stories in advance re estate agents etc. so we did a lot of research & ended up using independent English agent fluent in Spanish based in the Denia area who was just fantastic-both in the months leading up to our search and coming over looking for a place, so would highly recommend! We left a detailed google maps review if you need more details.   Good luck!                                                          https://comparepropertiesspain.com/

Ah good advice re compass thanks!🙏and great to hear your room not fallen below 21 that’s sounds like a plan! I’m currently paying £300 per month for my gas and electric probably £400 this month am in a detached home with 4 of us but still…!Am sure it will be a lot cheaper than the UK…

Ah thanks for this information Sean very helpful!Ah ok what you have done re checking places out we will be doing this year.My gut feeling is Denia but as not been in ‘real life’ need to to get a proper feel.We will stay in Denia hire a car and check out a few areas within the Costa Blanca region. Thanks very much for Denia agent link as English and fluent in Spanish is an ideal set up and will look into that.My Spanish is poor which I will need to address over the next few years..Thanks re dog info also we have two girls who are walked twice a day but can see that may be less in the very hot months.First few years ideally want to be in Spain November to around April time (will be getting the NLV) but ultimately all being well will then be a permanent move.I know without visa it’s 90 day rule. Ah ok well getting more villa for your buck also a big consideration so really will need to drive around. Thanks for taking time to post 🙏
