Ah thanks for this information Sean very helpful!Ah ok what you have done re checking places out we will be doing this year.My gut feeling is Denia but as not been in ‘real life’ need to to get a proper feel.We will stay in Denia hire a car and check out a few areas within the Costa Blanca re...

...gion.Thanks very much for Denia agent link as English and fluent in Spanish is an ideal set up and will look into that.My Spanish is poor which I will need to address over the next few years..Thanks re dog info also we have two girls who are walked twice a day but can see that may be less in the very hot months.First few years ideally want to be in Spain November to around April time (will be getting the NLV) but ultimately all being well will then be a permanent move.I know without visa it’s 90 day rule. Ah ok well getting more villa for your buck also a big consideration so really will need to drive around. Thanks for taking time to post 🙏

Sorry if I'm misreading this but you do know that with the NLV you are restricted from leaving Spain for more than 6 months at any one time and a total of 10 months only in the first 5 years?

Double whammy on your plan to stay from November to April without a visa but also leaving once you get a visa. After the first 5 years it becomes permanent residency and the time limits away from Spain are more relaxed. That combined 10 months in the first 5 years applies to leaving Spain so time in another EU country is also counted.

Thanks for confirming.Yes will have to initially hold back applying for NLV and run with 90 day rule if I want to return to UK for longer durations than 2 months per year…

Thanks for informative reply yes not option for younger son and unemployment quite high in Spain better to visit us for holidays.

Yes looked at pension income for both of us and we would meet that criteria.Yes would have to apply for a visa if past 3 months and  would have to be present in Spain for the 6 month threshold.Thanks ...

Hi Jill,

We bought a place in La Sella, near Denia (10 mins drive ) & 10 min drive to Javea about 18 months ago , we knew the Denia area from many years holidaying around 25 years ago, it’s beautiful , the mountains plus so many beaches & places to explore , we love it. So going on last year , we went to Spain most months last year & experienced different climate . Almost every day in every month you will wake up to a sunny day , Jan & Feb warming up around 11am & getting colder around 4ish when the sun goes down but nothing like the Uk , if you go for somewhere near Denia make sure you go south side of the mountain as can get colder north side .
You also will need some sort of heating as Spainish properties aren’t insulated like in the Uk . Our villa has air con units that also heat which are really good instant heat , we’ve also bought a couple of wall heaters as we have a large open plan downstairs ,

Denia doesn’t sleep in the winter months but obviously it’s a lot quieter. Javea Arenal(beach) is also lovely in the Winter , a lot of the bars & restaurants are open & busy.

I personally think giving up your own home in England  is massive & so we have chosen to have the best of both worlds & do our max 90 days in 180 each 6 months , we have kept our house in the Uk , we do rent our spainish property out when we aren’t there but mainly in June/July & Aug to help us maintain our income . Your eldest son could then continue his job & visit you or travel out with u . Your youngest son will have the best of both worlds .

If you have 360k to buy a property you will find a lovely place in this area, but remember you have to pay 10%tax on top of the purchase price (it’s different in different areas) plus around 5k solicitors fees . If you keep your English home & have less money you would still be able to find a nice place if you search well.
with regards Costa del sol I don’t know that area as well but there are some lovely areas there too, maybe not so mountainous .
Everyone in the chat has given really good info ,

If you need a good estate agent in this area let me know as ours was brilliant , he will drive you round to properties all in different areas that you would like to look at & helps so much .

Good luck with your search , your welcome to ask me any questions

Hi Debs

Thanks so much for this reply and strangely after mulling over information I had come up  with the idea of 90 days then gap then 90 days. And you are right giving up my lovely home of 21 years would be massive. So La Sella could possibly fit the bill (if Hubby Graham can be persuaded). To me this option would be best of both worlds and could spend Christmas’s and summers in beautiful Spain 🤗

This forum has been wonderful, and extremely helpful to me as I am currently wrestling with what to do and how to do it..

I will PM you if ok as I think having your Estate agents help could prove invaluable to us? Thanks so much Jill 🙏 X

Denia would be too far for me, so maybe look at Altea or Vilajoyosa for a similar alternative.

There is a coach direct from Denia to Alicante airport which makes access very easy. Check transport links with other areas you are considering. I live in Denia and its a lovely place all year round , quite a large Spanish population and definitely doesn't go quiet in the winter . A lot of resorts in the area almost close down in winter.

Thanks good to know about the coach for future reference.Ah pleased to also hear that Denia isn’t quiet in the winter.A definite would be spending Christmas and New Year in our chosen place to escape the dreary grey wet UK weather! Is Denia dog friendly do you know?Meaning are there any places we could go to eat and bring the pouches along?

Looking at your criteria maybe you should reconsider your search area. Denia has only one small designated dog friendly beach and most good restaurants will not admit dogs. In saying that, some cafes welcome dogs on leads on terraces and provide water bowls.

There's a far greater choice matching your needs further south, eg Torrevieja, Villajoyosa.

Thanks as you say dog friendly places is a consideration for us so will need to weigh it all up.

I have a 2 years to research before settling on the location and the wealth of information supplied on this forum has been really helpful thanks again 🙏
