Hi Mary,

I agree to some extent with your post, so long as it's not a "UK versus Spain" thing - that's why I made the point that Spain has also banned travellers from Brazil and South Africa, i.e. the three countries with identified variants.  The problem arises when nationals and residents of a coun...

...try travel, because they can't be denied re-entry to their country of nationality or permanent residence.

Personally, I think the UK's position not to ban people, but instead to make it so inhospitable - i.e. expensive! - is designed to discourage people from travel.  I have family and a property in the UK that I haven't visited for 18 months.  The UK's (and Spain's) current rules allow me to do so, but I would be putting my family in the UK, my friends in Spain and myself at risk - for some people, that's not a priority.  I actually think it's more effective to hit people's pockets and I wish Spain would do the same thing - it's absurd that people are looking for ways to circumvent Spain's travel ban and then don't have to quarantine when they get here.

Stay safe,

Kim

No certainly not a Spain UK thing, was just highlighting that the UK is  doing some things well ie vaccines, and on the other hand those not on the red list can enter willy nilly with no justified reason.

We again have not visited our Spanish home in months but again have to abide by the rules, not allowed out of UK not allowed in Spain.

Can visitors from France and Germany travel overland to Spain?

Hi John,

I think the slow roll-out of vaccinations in Spain (and the wider EU) means they're walking a tightrope, having to balance the health needs of the population with opening up the tourist sector.  Hopefully, the EU (and the UK) will get to grips with how (whether?) and when they will roll-out 'vaccination passports'.  I can see there being uproar if such a system is launched before everyone has been offered a vaccine.

On your last point, "at moment if ban was lifted the only route would be to drive", have you read this article in today's Telegraph?

https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2021/03/22/airport-visitors-could-fined-5000-breaking-covid-travel-ban/?WT.mc_id=e_DM1361965&WT.tsrc=email&etype=Edi_FrB_New&utmsource=email&utm_medium=Edi_FrB_New20210323&utm_campaign=DM1361965

and particularly this paragraph:

"People “found at an embarkation point” without a “reasonable excuse” for travel from March 29 are eligible for the hefty punishment, which Downing Street indicated was intended to deter would-be Easter holidaymakers."

Although the article refers to airports, ferry ports have previously been included in similar restrictions - and surely EuroTunnel is an "embarkation point" too?

It appears that the UK is still favouring financial penalties against its own, rather than banning travellers from the EU.

Kind regards,

Kim

I agree, John, UK policies last year were clearly aimed at ensuring domestic tourist spend and even with Covid-19 restrictions in place, it was very successful.

Kind regards,

Kim

There's an article in El Pais which highlights this bizarre paradox:

https://english.elpais.com/economy_and_business/2021-03-22/spain-to-welcome-german-visitors-over-easter-break-despite-restrictions-on-national-tourism.html?rel=lom

I'm not sure the "overland" travel is actually acceptable as you presumably breach the regional lockdowns but flying in .....???

I do have to ask if you are a second home owner wanting to travel to Spain . if you do not have genuine reason to travel i.e. Not selling not getting ready to rent. Any change in the governments rules are of no help. Do I lie to get away? And how do you prove what your going to do when you get to Spain? It's a minefield

Understood, my reply was not to do with your circumstances (as presumably from the UK and the current UK legislation applies) but was in relation to the post from PixElated regarding French/German travel to Spain at the present time.

Hi Gordon,

I have been a subscriber to the Gov.uk website for at least 4 years and have lost count of the number of times I have advocated it as a source of reliable information.  However, it cannot be read in isolation, which is why you have failed to understand the point of my post.

The purpose of my post is to correct misinformation quoted on another thread, because it has been taken out of context: cherry-picking quotes about being able to travel for "legal" reasons while ignoring, on the SAME PAGE, the statement,

"Some restrictions on travellers from outside the European Union and the Schengen free-travel area remain in place. You should refer to the Spanish Embassy in the country you are in for further advice".

For the avoidance of doubt that, in common with other Third Country Nationals, refers to UK citizens.  If those concerned had referred to the Spanish Embassy, as advised on Gov.UK, they would have known that there is a ban on travellers from the UK.  The member who spoke of a friend, denied boarding - twice - could have been saved much frustration and money if they'd been aware.  There is little point having a forum such as this if we allow incorrect and incomplete information to go unchallenged.

So, I will say it again: Spain decides who enters its borders, NOT the UK.

Kind regards,

Kim

The UK's own restrictions on travel until 17 May and fines of £5,000 for those who attempt to travel without a legitimate reason should prevent their fans from travelling  ;o)
