Download the EX-15 form https://www.inclusion.gob.es/documents/410169/2156469/15-Formulario_NIE_y_certificados.pdf

Most fields are self explanatory. 1er apelido is your surname. 2 er apelido is your second surname if you have one.

Nombre is your first name (put both in here if you have a middle name)  Sexo H for male (hombre) M for female (mujer)

Fecha de nacimiento is date of birth as in 16/03/1980 and lugar is town and pais is country as in York - Reino Unido

Nacionalidad British

Estado Civil S - Single C Married V widowed D Divorced Sp Separated

Nombre de Padre Father's Name (if not known put S/N) Nombre de Madre Mother's Name

Then your address Name of Street/ Avenue or whatever. No House number Piso flat number if in an apartment

Localidad Town CP Postcode such as 03189 Provincia Alicante

Then your mobile phone and email

Finally the name of an agent if you have one.

Next page are the details of your agent.

4,1 Tipo de documento tick the NIE box and in the certificado tick either as a resident or non resident

4,2 Motivos (reason) Economic, Professional or Social (probably economic if buying a property or social if visiting)

4.3 Lugar de presentacion Where you are applying - Foreigners' Office, National Police station or consular office (if applying in UK)

4.4 Situacion en Espana, Estancia if your stays are up to 90 days and Residencia if taking up residency.

You then need to make an appointment at a foreigners office or national police station using this form https://icp.administracionelectronica.gob.es/icpco/volverPortada

Select the province Alicante then, on the next page, National Police procedures Assignment of NIE. This also gives you a link to the form 790 012 (in English but will print our in Spanish) to pay the tax at a bank which is about 12 euro or so but it will tell you how much once you've selected NIE,

And then wait for an appointment to become available which could take some time so keep trying at different times of the day.

If in UK you can apply at a Spanish consular office in London, Manchester or Edinburgh.

Don't pay 400 euro to do it for goodness sake.

Although I don't need an NIE, your so helpful, well done

It really is easily doable but if you're not confident enough check around for someone local who does translating etc. You should find someone to do it for a realistic amount.

As several people have advised, the process and form are fairly straightforward. The biggest hurdle is often getting an appointment. I suggest you apply immediately even if you haven't yet filled out the form. Also, a local Gestoría should be able to do everything for you for, including attending the appointment, for well under €100. Just pop in an ask them.

What an excellent post - thank you very much.

My wife and myself are planning to 'long-term rent' in Spain and plan to apply for our NIE in London.  Can anyone tell me what they would accept as proof that we need a number (motivos)  ?  I have been told they can be pedantic.

Do you need written proof?  We have booked a let for a few months even though we can only use it for 90 days.

We DO want to get our numbers sorted just to be 'tidy' even though some people say don't get one until you need one.  I would like to 'tick this one off.

Hi. My husband and I purchased a house in Denia area this summer. On our viewing trip before we went home we met with an independent lawyer to deal with the purchase 2 days before we flew back to U.K. We asked our lawyer if he could please also get our NIE numbers. He charged us €150 each / €300 in total to get both our NIE numbers. I knew we could do it ourselves for cheaper. But as other posters have pointed out, he did everything (all the paperwork & attended police appointments etc.) while we were back in the UK. So we felt this was a lot easier and less hassle for us and definitely worth the cost, which it was; he emailed to us our NIE letters soon after our return to U.K. So the €400 quote from your lawyer just to get one NIE, as others have pointed out, is taking the proverbial!

You do not need proof of what you intend to do, just say so on the form EX-15.

https://www.exteriores.gob.es/Consulados/londres/en/ServiciosConsular
Documentation required to apply for a NIE at the Consular Office it lists     " Documentary proof of the need to obtain a NIE."

I would hate to travel from Norfolk to London and get refused
