Hi we are looking to buy a holiday home in this area. Can anyone tell us what the local bars and eateries are really like! Plus is is safe? Are there places more safer than others?

Also what is it like in the Winter months?

Hi RH69,

Are you thinking of buying in the village or Los Palacios?  Formentera only has about 4,200 inhabitants and it's a very friendly place, especially if you learn enough of the language to get by in shops and bars.  It has a mixture of Spanish and foreign bars and restaurants, and all the usual amenities, e.g. a bank, cashpoints, a pharmacy, supermarket, sports centre, Local Police station and a selection of independent shops, such as a bakery.  It has a nice town square where the church and Town Hall are located, with another couple of bars.  There are medical centres in both the village and Los Palacios.  Both areas are close to the larger towns of Benijofar and Rojales (5 minutes in the car, 20-30 minutes walk), where you're spoilt for choice of amenities, including a theatre.  The Segura river runs through the centre of the village (and Rojales), and you can walk or cycle along its banks for miles in both directions.

There's nowhere I would regard as unsafe.  I probably wouldn't walk down "Disco Alley" (Los Palacios) late at night on the weekend - but only because I'd feel really old alongside all the Spanish youngsters in their dancing gear!  ;o)

Kind regards,

Kim

Winter months can be really cold as the houses generally have no insulation so some sort of heating will be required, the damp in Spanish houses is also a widespread problem as they are built without a damp proof course but heating and good ventilation will help.
