EU citizen and British partner applying for residency

My wife and I will be staying in Gandia with our family (2 kids) for 9 months. Both of us have already obtained NIE numbers. We have a rental contract for another 9 months.

We were quoted around €2,400 for a family private healthcare policy (fully compliant, "like for like" with Spanish healthcare), and it was explained to us that this was required for us to obtain residency.

- Do all 4 of us need to get private medical insurance to apply for residency? (Looking to save cost here)

- There is also a visa category to reunite family members. If my wife applied first, and we all applied to reunite our family, would this make any difference? Or do we still need private healthcare for all of us?

- Given our situation (1 partner EU national, kids EU national, me British citizen) what would be the recommended approach for us?

- Concerning tax, I occasionally work remotely for a British company. I am assuming I will only be considered for Spanish tax residency in the financial year beginning April 2023.. is that correct?

Kind regards,

Scott

Hi Scott

Sorry, I can't help you with the questions you raised re the best health insurance option, but I wanted to point out to you re income tax that the Spanish tax year is the calendar year, not April to March like in the UK.

If you first take up residence with more than half the calendar year remaining, you will be considered tax resident in Spain for the whole of that year. Yes, your whole income for that year will be taxable in Spain even if you only arrived in the last week of June! Be careful of that one, and think about when you're selling any property in the UK, it may become liable for capital gains tax because of that rule.

Hi Scott, welcome to the forum.

As EU nationals, seeking residency, then yes you will all need full healthcare, equivalent to the Spanish healthcare, with no co payments. We used ASSSA for our residency application a couple of years ago.

The financial requirements, if I remember correctly, are around 600 euro per month for the initial applicant plus a much smaller amount for the each dependent applicant. Once you have residency then the UK passport holder can apply on the back of your application under the same terms, which is a lot easier than applying on their own.

The tax year in Spain is from Jan to December. I would just be careful to take advice if you have property to sell during your application process, nobody wants to be paying CGT.

Good luck

As for health insurance, seems rather expensive for one person. My partner and I paid around 2k for the two of us 3 years ago but perhaps the current economic crisis has added costs. Once you have been officially resident in Spain for 1 year you can apply to join the Convenio Especial and this gives you full access to the Spanish health service. The only exception is you must pay for prescriptions in full. If you are in receipt of UK state pension you can apply for form S1 and this will give you full access to the health service and the cost of prescriptions will be based on your tax return each year. You can add all family members to the S1. Current fees for the Convenio are 60€ per person per month or if you are 65+ 157€ per month This link will provide information about the Convenio:

Further information about the S1 can be accessed from this link:

The income tax year in Spain runs from 1 January until 31 December.

I have dual citizenship (IRISH & US)  & live full time in USA. I will be moving to Torrevieja in April 2023.  I am looking for a moving company.  And any information on taxes & healthcare too please!   Currently I receive Social Security & a teachers pension.
I have Medicare & Humana for healthcare.  I will apply for E111 from Ireland.          Thanks for all advice.  😃
