Glad I don't have to be on the London Underground in the morning 🙁

True, but not just the Tube - every piece of public transport is a potential hazard. So many brave workers in public transport have made the ultimate sacrifice in their efforts to keep the nation moving.

I for one find bus and tram where I now live in the UK fantastic ( well before the start of the epidemic), now I stay at home and its been amazing how many jobs that I kept putting off in our new UK home are in the process of getting done.

We have a small back garden all nicely refiurbed and the weather has been wonderful - who needs to go out to enjoy some sun bathing and cooking on a plancha has been great.

I look with interest every day at El Pais and although many in Spain (with its real draconian interventions), have struggled, at least Sanchez has been transparent in the planning to de escalate. No 10 could maybe learn a few lessons perhaps?

This post that was quoted has been deleted.

I  mentioned only  "the lady."

This quote was attributed to many, one in particular: Churchill’s bodyguard testified that this exchange with Bessie Braddock did occur in 1946, this popular joke had been doing the rounds since the 1880s. It is likely that if Churchill's riposte did take place, he was in fact inspired by previous versions he would have heard.

"Winston Churchill: "Bessie, my dear, you are ugly, and what’s more, you are disgustingly ugly. But tomorrow I shall be sober and you will still be disgustingly ugly.".

On an aside, who will be quoting tomorrow & in months time?

Anyway RayD, enjoy a little freedom tomorrow.

PS (one of my favorite pictures)

  • Only 7.5 % above Spain? ..so it’s ok then ,we don’t have to worry to much Only 7.5 more extra people in 100 extra dying ??? Honestly this is sickening ,I was accused on another post of being a bad  loser because of Brexit etc and basically Brit bashing .when I commented on Boris s inability to make a correct decision on anything ..Now he’s allowing people out as many times as they want to exercise ..Duh?? That’s really sensible is nt it ...and for the record ,I wasn’t Brit. bashing.  ...I was simply making an observation that this guy is an out and out idiot ,who is constantly making bad decisions ,and wonder when / if he will do / say something actually helpful ..It is our families and friends in the Uk ,he is killing ...I don’t need maths or a calculator to work that out !

All the arguments about the numbers are utterly pointless until we see the number of additional deaths in the first and second half of this year. Only then can we begin to ascertain the number of additional deaths due to Covid-19. And before anyone mentions the number of additional deaths on a we...

...ekly basis, don't, again it's meaningless. We need to see the change over a much greater period of time than a week.

In short, without getting in the human consequences, looking at this from a purely numbers POV, we need to establish how many additional deaths occurred in the full year, as opposed to the number of deaths that were bought forward due to Covid-19. Or, to put it another way: How many people who were not likely to die in 2020, died in 2020. That's your real number of fatalities.

I realise this sounds cold-hearted, but it's just about being accurate with the true figures, which we won't know until next year.

As for comparing like-for-like with other countries, it's pointless. As the original poster said, there are so many factors involved, not least that most countries are manipulating the numbers to support their own agenda.

This comparable email of number per km in each country was more interesting for me. Thank you so much for your email. However, I want to point out to some people who are trying to turn it into a race between nations, those who had less dead people  and those countries who have done well. Is this something we should this in the Forum. Just let us feel for the people who lost family members and say no more. Luna

I think the point is the UK government and their guidance are not showing up well ,nobody wants to compare deaths in different nations ,but it is a way of judging governments performances and unfortunately governments strategy or lack of it costs lifes and also increases lockdown length which impacts on peoples health and wellbeing ,I take no pleasure in bashing the UK government  in fact I wish I was singing their praises and we had the least deaths in Europe

Luna, I agree. The media in particular seem to be conducting a "Eurovision Death Contest". Every death from this awful virus has a story behind it. A story of loving memories of times past, a story of children/grandchildren growing up and many many more memories. So the memories will flow and flow to aid the grieving process.

There are so many theories as to who has the most dead. Just one person dead from this evil is a tragedy we all share, so let us all just think how fortunate we are to still be alive, and for us all to do our utmost to prevent the rise in deaths no matter which country we live in.

Not in any part of the post was the situations seriousness belittled. It was purely a note to say that different figures can give different views and the fact that Britain was going to be so much higher than Spain and Italy was being highlighted by many, so please don’t impose your negative view on this post as being the reason it was put on here.

No other comment about time lines.

In mid-December 2019, an emerging cluster of people, many linked to in Wuhan, infected with pneumonia with no clear causes. Chinese scientists subsequently linked the pneumonia to a new strain that was given the initial designation of SARS-Cov-2.  Some of the first symptoms appeared on early December, and 24 cases were later discovered to have connection to a seafood market. Therefore one month later ie 10 Jan 2020 (1st death & 41 confirmed infections caused by this virus were 1st reported)

By 22 January 2020, the novel coronavirus had spread to major cities and provinces in China, with 571 confirmed cases and only 17 deaths reported.

At 2am on 23 January 2020, authorities issued a notice informing residents of Wuhan that from 10am, all public transport, including buses, railways, flights, and ferry services would be suspended.

The rest we know & wait.
