Bringing my car from Tenerife
Hi There, we're moving to GA in January. I know already I'll have to get a new Padron, but I suppose I'll have to register
my Tenerife bought car (16 years old). Can you tell me the process for that please?

Sorry, but it's not that easy. The vehicle must be "imported" from a "Tax-free" territory. Get a complete estimate from any "Agente de Aduanas" in Alicante.
Ignore both of the barrack room lawyers Dave go and Silvia at the Foreign Advisory Bureau in Gran Alicant.

You dont need a lawyer to import the car and the tax will be small if the car is years old.
Anyway, I am reading that in your case import the car will be free:
Regards.
Their initial advice is free and he is in Gran Alicant anyway, but you obviously know better quoting a third party website from two years ago than someone who is a Spanish lawyer.

I bought a car on Tenerife in December 2018. The car was 25 years old.
I imported it to mainland Spain (I live on Costa Blanca. I have Residency).
I paid import tax at 20% of the Cadastral value.
Tenerife's tax rules are different from mainland Spain.
You will need a gestor.
This isn't speculation - I did it last year. The car was brought to mainland Spain by ferry, accompanied by the contract of sale (from the previous owner to me). I then drove it to Cartegena where a specialist gestor checked it against the documentation (in effect, he just checked the chassis number stamped on the scuttle under the bonnet - he wouldn't trust the little aluminium plate riveted on by the bonnet catch), and I paid the 20% tax plus his fee. Then my local gestor then processed the change of ownership and address.

Thanks for that. Do you mind telling me how much we're talking about? BTW I am the original owner, and it'll cost more than the car's market value to get it to GA. Many thanks for the info.

DaveC46, where you living in Tenerife until now or are you moving to Gran Alacant from somewhere different place? When did you buy your car?
If you were in Tenerife your situation is different than Kelvin1960, who was living in this area when he bought the car from Tenerife. Kelvin1960 had to pay taxes in that case.

Yes, I bought the car in 2003 here in Tenerife, and I'm relocating to GA in January 2020.

From memory, the import gestor in Cartagena was around 50 Euros (plus the 20% tax on the car's value). The import gestor was Geyco, on 968-124511.
The name/address change (by my local gestor) was 298 Euros. You will probably only need an address change (unless your NIE changes if you move to the mainland... I don't know about this). I had to complete the import process before my local gestor could effect the name change.
The previous owner was very old, so her agent drove the car to Malaga, where I picked it up. As a Tenerife resident, I think the agent paid around 300 Euros one-way for that ferry trip. My local gestor arranged insurance in my name which I copied to the agent. This document, plus the contract of sale, enabled him to drive the car legally.
I bought the car on Tenerife because (a) it is an unusual car which I particularly wanted, and (b) island cars tend to have low mileages. Used cars here on the mainland have often been to the moon and back, so it still might be worth your while to bring your car here.
