As a couple of Fifers who made the move to Spain two years ago we both wish you the best of luck and hope your as lucky as we have been. Absolutely no regrets, love the area we are in, made lots of new friends and thankfully with the rescue dog we acquired when we got here plenty of exercise.

Thanks. You're from the Kingdom of Fife. So's my wife 🥰.

She likes dogs, but I'm a cat person: one thing I like about Alicante City is you see lots of cats. 😺😺😺

It looks like you moved at just the right time- smart play - hope it continues working for you.

Hello

We have an apartment in Gran Alacant in an urbanisation called Novamar.
I would recommend looking in this area because of the location.  It is within walking distance to the beautiful Carabassi beach ( 15-20 minutes stroll) also the bus stops are located down at the beach which will...

... take you to Santa Pola or Alicante . Although your budget is tight, I think you could get a 2 bed apartment in this area. Look at urbanisations called Monte Mar (bajo) or Mediterraneo. These urbs offer a small strip of pubs/ restaurants within walking distance. There is a local bus that does a circular route around Gran Alacant when you want to go to the supermarket or to check out other areas.

We have rented in various areas of Gran Alacant and Santa Pola over the years and found this area of GA suits our requirements best.

If possible ( not withstanding a worldwide pandemic 😷) I would recommend renting for a time to get a feel for GA.

good luck in your search

Anne ( also for snowy glasgow ☃️)

Someone pointed out on another forum that there's only one beach in Gran Alacant. Is that a disadvantage, or is there plenty of space?

I don't know how far away you live from the nearest airport, Gran Alacant is wihtin a stone's throw from Alicante's quite busy airport. I wouldn't want to live there.

I have purchased in Gran alacant and the planes don’t bother us at all. We have also never been over crowded on the beach.
You would be better to spend a week or so in different areas to get a better feel of what it has and what you want.

The things that were there pre-covid may all have changed, but let’s hope it bounces back to what it was 🤷‍♀️

Living near an airport and living under a flight path are two different things.

From my terrace I can see the lights of Alicante airport in the distance and can watch the planes come and go ....I find that enjoyable and interesting ( and I’m not a plane spotter )

I have been on the beach on urbanova and that is directly under the flight path .... a different thing altogether.  Slightly scary !

Killjoy .... you live in Fortuna which is in Murcia so I assume you don’t know Gran Alacant . I think the original poster needs facts based on typical life in GA not subjective opinions.

To be clear ....GA is not on the flight path but you can be in your apartment in less than 10 minutes after jumping into taxi at the airport for €20 😀👍

That's helpful. I have decided I am not worried about nearness of the airport: the advantages clearly outweigh any disadvantages.

Also not worried about there being only one beach. El Postiguet has never been too busy for me and it has to cater for the entire population of Alicante City.

So, as soon as the politicians give the green light, will be swooping down on Gran Alacant.

Thanks for all your advice.

You obviously don't know Gran Alacant. Its not on the flight path. We have a house there, with a great view of the airport from our terrace, we can see flights arriving and departing, but absolutely no aircraft noise. It's at least 10km away from us, so we need binoculars. We can see the sea, the airport, Los Arenales, Alicante and the mountains.  Its a great place.

Can I suggest that you have a look at the Citizens Advise Bureau Spain website, as well as the Tips and Guides section of this site, as much of the bureaucracy for Brits changed on the 1st January 2021 as the UK became part of the Third Country group.   That is not to say that things changed because of the UK leaving the EU but that UK people now come under the rules and regulations that most other countries have been under for a number of years.

Also, be aware that Gran Alacant does not come under the jurisdiction of the city of Alicante, it is, I understand, actually under the jurisdiction of Santa Pola.

We have had a holiday home in Gran Alacant since 2001. Do not be put off by it’s proximity to the airport. We have very few planes flying overhead although it is great to see them taking off and landing. It’s so lovely to be in your holiday home within such a short time after your flight to Spain. The beaches are absolutely fantastic, there is a great choice of Supermarkets and places to eat and it is incredibly safe. Alicante and all it has to offer is a short drive and Murcia easily accessible. Good public transport too.

Hi, we have been in Spain for just over two years, firstly in Quesada, we decided to move to Gran Alacant to be nearer the Golf course but it was the best decision we made.  We live in the lower part near the commercial centre, yes it’s near the Airport you do occasionally hear a rumble from the planes depending on which direction they are landing and taking off from.  But nothing much.  We started out on a gated community and didn’t like it.  But there are plenty of hubs around with pubs, restaurants and shops in each area,  plenty of beaches and easily accessible as there is a local bus and road train.  Not sure how busy or noisy the commercial centre will get at night yet as everything has been locked down since we moved so can’t give an opinion on that yet.  Alicante city is only a ten minute drive, Elche is 15 minutes away and Santa Pola is 5 minutes so we are in a good location for shopping.  Supermarkets are a plenty and there is a small local market on a Thursday with bigger ones in Santa Pola on Saturday and Monday.  There’s also plenty of places to keep you from feeling isolated with a bowls club, ladies group and plenty of pub quizzes to allow you to mingle.  We are originally from Largs.  Hope you get the chance to make your move.  Send us a message if you do, will be glad to meet you for a wee drink.

Cheers. All that is useful. Sadly, I am suddenly experiencing heavy fire at home about my Spanish dream.

Hopefully, will come through it, and if so, will contact you when we get out there: that would be great.

Although I doubt anywhere in Gran Alacant compares with the old Nardini's in Largs, eh.
