Hi,

I am currently on holiday with my family in gran alacant and have been considering for a while moving the family to spain permanently from the UK.  I was looking for advice on how easy it is finding work without speaking spanish (although i am keen to learn if needed), what childcare options are and what the local schools are like? I have twins at 3 years old and a 7 year old.

Any ideas, tips anything at all greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Hi MLR,

If you have UK passports.......

Firstly to live and work in Spain you will need to gain a work visa. To be able to get a work visa you will need to apply for a work position in Spain and get a definite offer of contracted work, then your prospective employer will need to apply for a work visa on your behalf from the Spanish consulate in the UK.

All available work in Spain has to be offered to an EU citizen first by law so unless you have unusual or exceptional abilities that cannot be found within the EU then it highly unlikely that you will find work.

If you do find a work position it will need to pay you enough to support all your family and be expected to be around €45,000 per annum for a family of 4. You cannot just move to Spain without some sort of visa.

If you have or can get an Irish passport then you and your family can move here and look for work.

Thank you so much for getting back to me.  Unfortunately i thought that might be the case.  I work in social care but also have loads of admin experience and my partner is in banking...do you know if there are any employers we could possibly look at for opportunities or are there not really many jobs in these areas?

Thanks again

Spanish banks are trying to cut staff, and in admin and social care you would need to speak Spanish. You could try and look at jobs in Gibraltar, but otherwise, unfortunately, you'll have next to no chance.

If you really want to leave the UK it’s now much easier to get a visa for Australia,Canada or New Zealand.

Unfortunately i can only agree with swimmer57. Spain still has one of the highest unemployment rates within the EU. Portugal is not so stringent about rules as Spain, might be worth thinking about too.....

Other Forum members have provided you with good information. However, for your information the following link will take you to the official guidance in how to obtain a visa for Spain as issued by the Spanish Government together with other associated links. Happy reading:

Thank you all for the info! So disappointing to hear that it might not happen for us.  Kids are so much happier being over here and I would've loved for it to have been a new start for us.

Really appreciate all the advice though

Unemployment is at 30% which is crackers, I have moved here with my Spanish partner who is retired and got a pension I've had to finish work early due to medical reasons but I'm renting my UK home we are living in his Spanish house and we also have another rental in UK for income I also have a bit of work pension and savings, some of his family have degrees and still couldn't get into what they wanted, some got great education and landed a great job but we're too lazy to continue I guess especially up here in Northern Spain it's very rural hardly any traffic except now holiday campervans that are here for surfing it's definitely like living in the 70,'s! So builders are not that busy and things are expensive that are not in high demand like scaffolding ,we brought our own to do roof, even waiters are not well paid so not alot around,it's pretty obvious that no job is going to a non EU person teaching English is an option but you really need to learn Spanish ,I'm getting there but here they speak gallego which is similar to Portuguese and makes life difficult! I'm guessing u don't have option of renting out your UK home?
