Hello lovely people hope you’re doing okay. I’ve posted previously around the same sort of topic but would appreciate any help/guidance on the following. Has anyone driven from Birmingham (or England) to Alicante? My partner is trying to work out the best/easiest/most cost effective/timely way to drive a van (removal as we’re moving to Spain). Someone we know suggested going on the euroshuttle instead of a ferry. Didn’t even know you could do that! Cost of fuel/tolls in France/Spain? Reaching out to the ‘experts’ to give us some sound good advice please. Won’t be until October. Thank you

Hi,

We drove from Birmingham, we jumped on the ferry to Bilbao and then drove across Spain in one go, around a 9 hr drive. I weighed up the costs of ferries/chunnel etc. With the extra driving, hotel rooms and tolls, in my case it wasn't worth driving through France to save a few pounds. Yes the Bilbao ferry is bit more expensive, but it saved a hell of a lot of driving and other costs.

From memory the tolls on the route we took (straight past Madrid) came to around €25 and we used slightly over one and a half tanks of fuel on the whole journey from Brum to here.

Brilliant thank you. What ferry did you use and was it from Portsmouth?

yes we went from Portsmouth, Birmingham to Portsmouth was the hardest part of the journey :)

we took the ferry that arrived in Bilbao early in the  morning so we could do the Spanish side in one go during the daylight.

I use via-michelin for my route planning, gives you costs and times, I check things with Google, these work which ever way you choose.

Fuel France similar to UK, Spain cheaper.

Cost not much in it, between cost of Spanish ferry and overland, overland is cheaper maybe by £100 i would expect to save more with a removal van, and you do get the opportunity to see a bit of France.

I'm from the Midland and my route tries to be as cost effective as posible, but I do not like driving and getting a bad back so I have three stops.

Folkestone/ or Dover over and try to get to Val de Reuil (you need to be careful in Rouen you cannot avoid the built up area) and stop there first nights, plenty of hotels, and places to eat.

Then use N154 south to Chartres where I pick up the N10, I stay on it to Tours. At Tours I get on the A10 to J30 (this avoids a bit of poor road with lots of roundabouts etc that implead progress) where I get on the N10 again.

N10 to Bordeaux, normally stop before Bordeaux, as it avoids moving to far from the road to get a hotel, but have stopped in Bordeaux, just on the south side, we do stop in cheap roadside hotels. Once you leave Bordeaux there are not many hotels before the border region, but we can then make Pamplona or Zaragoza.

I do not use pay motorways until after Pamplona and only to the A68 (not AP68), from Zaragoza it is Toll free the rest of the way.

I do have a good real Satnav and an app separate to detect Speed cameras, if you use nation roads there are some limited bits that have SPEED  LIMITS that by Uk standards are very low, in both Spain and France.

pm me if I can help

It’s worth noting that since Brexit, a UK register car can no longer be traced back to the uk for the payment of speeding fines via speed cameras! I don’t advocate breaking the rules however! And there will always be a danger of being caught my a mobile speed trap or a police traffic car!,

Are you sure?

I would like to stop paying the French government for doing 86kph (53 Mph) on open roads with the national 80 limit (50mph).

Do you know how I can confirm not that I want to break the law in any country.
