Hi, I have a property in zarra, in valencia province, I am about to buy a car from a dealership in denia, but I am still in uk. How can I check out this garage is actually the garage I am dealing with, I am paying for a car by spanish bank transfer, all paperwork in ford headed and looks genuine. And all emails are ok. How do I make myself happy that this is a genuine deal.

I'd be extremely careful. Buying from a garage is absolutely no warrant for a fair deal. There is a transfer tax on used vehicles depending on age and make but not on condition, except if VAT is shown in invoice. In many cases you won't even get an invoice but sign a contract with an unknown seller. Furthermore you should request proof of how many previous owners and look into the "Tarjeta de Inspeccion Tecnica" (MOT) if severe failures were detected. What about paint, tires, bodyworks, power steering etc. Take your time. I - speaking for myself - never would buy a used vehicle in Spain without knowing the previous owner personally and never, never form a dealer.

Hi thanks for your reply, no the car is brand new, just would like to know how you would check a sales person is who they are and work where they say they work.

Google the name of the dealer in Denia. Put the address into Google maps to check the building exists.

Auto Christian Denia is the official local dealer. If it’s them make contact on their website and explain you concerns.
They will have a record of the vehicle order.
Check the email address you have businesses don’t normally use Google or Yahoo email.
Their address will be [email protected]

Company/dealer emails will have the business address, telephone number, VAT number etc. It’s a legal requirement on a business email.

You can type what you want in English and use Google translate for the Spanish. Put both texts in your email.
Google mangles the Spanish language, a main dealer in Denia will usually have somebody who speaks English.

Check the bank transfer details. Is the bank somewhere near the dealer or the groups headquarters?

Thanks that was more like I was needing to know. Everything fits, as you have said.

I think you are being a bit harsh here, killjoy! We bought a used car from an official dealer in Denia last year, no problems, they dealt with all transfer paperwork, included in price, they did exactly what they said on the tin!

If is a used car, because if is new a garage would not sell it, I would test the car before buy in another garage BEFORE buy

Once again Killjoy lives up to his name. There are many reputable dealers here in Spain who handle the whole process professionally, deal with all the paperwork and legal requirements, and offer a great after sales service.

Sorry but I write from my own experiences affecting people I know. May depend on location and I am very hapy if there are people having a positive story to tell.

WOW KILLJOY. Never buy a car from a used car dealer in Spain !!!

Why not buy one in UK and pay a fortune getting it here. then transfer details to Spanish. Import duties if you havent owned the car very long. I have a LHD 2007 Freelander I am bringing from the UK. Over 1000 euros to import and transfer details.

Absolute rubbish. Talk about tarring all dealers with the same brush.

I however went to the other extreme. Bought my son a car from Mallorca (used car dealer). Went to look at the car. Bought it and had it delivered to Alicante region. They paid ALL taxes, name transfer etc. The transaction was fantastic and simple start to finish.

If youre speaking from experience, maybe better to say where not to by from, rather than not to buy from anywhere in Spain !
