The significant point is "checked-in". Simply buying a cheap low-season online ferry ticket from Dover to Calais probably wouldn't cut it. The insurer would likely need to see a record of the car having actually made the ferry journey.

The following gov.uk website is saying that UK-insured cars would need insurance green cards after a no-deal Brexit, which would further complicate reliance on UK-based insurance.

Liberty Seguros will insure a UK registered car and it will show on the UK insurance database enabling it to be road taxed. GPS speedometers are available on eBay.

Why not put your number on a retention certificate in the uk then do a legal Spanish registration. You will keep the original uk Reg for ten years and can renew it after then. Best to be legal or they will do a war dance on you and if, heaven forbid, you accidentally killed someone you could end up in a Spanish gaol. Don’t take a chance.

I have had several classic cars in Spain, currently an MG Midget.  Because it is registered in the UK I was able to get cheap classic car insurance for it from one of the many UK companies with a 6 month European cover.  There does not seem to be any way that they know when, or how long...

..., it has been out of the UK because it is over 40 years old and does not need taxing or MOT........

I know that Beneficial Insurance - Jayne -  will cover you, give her a try.

Spanish classic car insurance does not have the use restriction which one of the replies has mentioned except for the mileage limit.

I would advise putting the car on Historic plates because Spanish classic insurance is quite cheap and you only need an ITV every 4 years and you are legal......

Richard

I have a desire to keep a UK registered Classic English motorcycle in Spain for the 3 month periods I would be staying at my holiday home, with the intention of leaving it in Spain off the road for the months I am not there. When I am there it would be legal in UK and therefore I understand Spain.

However, asking on another forum how the Spanish Police feel if you cannot produce an MOT even though one is not required in UK I get the feeling that they might not understand, the other worry was that if they stop and investigate you, they would want to see evidence that you are indeed only in the country and using the vehicle for those three months. Producing flight tickets as evidence of your coming and going would surely indicate to them that the vehicle is being left behind, even if not used on the  roads. Do you know if this is indeed the case and do you have any experience regarding not needing a current MOT please?
