Driving licence problem

My Spanish driving licence is due for renewal in February but I am currently not driving as I have cataracts and do not feel safe on the road. Specsavers have told me I will not pass the sight test to renew the licence.
Has anyone any knowledge about the best way forward? Should I book the licence test and then fail or can I let my licence lapse and simply renew when my cataracts have been treated. Reading posts about the surgery it will probably take about a year before I am able to drive again.
I think it may be easier to check with one of the authorised test centres but hoped someone could possibly advise.
