Usually it's a small rubber membrane which needs to be replaced after 4-5 years. Costs a few pennies and can be done in less than 1 hour with elementary DIY skills. Any "Specialist" will tell you that it's better to replace the wohle device. That's how they make money in less time w/o any work.
The membrane triggers the gas flow deoending on the water pressure.
