What is my NIF number?

Not only did I change my cheap tariff from the night when I am asleep, to eight hours during the day when I am up to use electricity, I also applied for paperless billing which further reduces the standing charge with Iberdrola.
However, they have sent me a link to register for paper-billing online, even though I gave my details at their shop.
I cannot register online however, as they request an "NIF" number. What is this please?, I tried my NIE number and every other number I could find on my billl to no avail.
